A crucial "cog" in the circulation of the North Atlantic is slowing down, which could signal a major upheaval in the climate of Britain, according to a study published today.

The report in Science comes as Hollywood prepares to release a film on the same theme, The Day After Tomorrow, in which snowstorms batter New Delhi and tornadoes strike Los Angeles after global warming disrupts ocean circulation patterns.

It seems logical that a gradual build-up of greenhouse gases will lead to an equally gradual change in climate. But this has been overturned by evidence found in ice and sediments which reveal that the global climate can lurch from warm to cold in a few decades when ocean circulation patterns change.

Water, even when moving sluggishly, carries significant heat and the tightly-linked Arctic and North Atlantic regions play a key role in the delicately balanced global ocean circulation system that warms the UK with the Gulf Stream. Disrupt it, and the UK could suffer drastic and unpredictable changes in temperature and rainfall, even an ice age, within a timescale ranging from a decade to a century.

Today in Science, a team reports that satellite measurements of sea surface height show there has been a slowdown in the anticlockwise circulation of surface water just below the Arctic Circle in the North Atlantic over the past decade.

Whether this slowdown is a consequence of basic global warming or part of a mid-term climate cycle it is too early to know, said Prof Peter Rhines of the University of Washington, Seattle.

Nor is it clear whether the slowdown will mean major changes in Atlantic circulation.

The 1990s was one of the most active periods of climate change during the past century in northern latitudes.

"The question is, how much 're-plumbing' of the ocean circulation is required to push the coupled atmosphere-ocean system over a threshold?" said Prof Rhines.

Finally, someone is leaking the truth! All this nonsense about global warming isn?t really about, The Earth will become to hot to allow life, that's just not the way the world works. There is a conveyor belt called the Gulf Stream. It carries warm Gulf water to northern Europe. When the globe warms up a little too much the polar ice caps melt sending fresh water which is heavier that salt water into the north Atlantic. That screws up the conveyor belt and it starts an ice age. This has happened numerous times in the past.

England, France, Germany and Russia aren?t worried about Global Warming as the end of the world. They are worried about there own butts and loosing power if forced to relocate. Like the people who live in Sudan, AKA, The Desert, they are fearful about leaving their own turf.

Screw ?em, if Moscow, Helsinki and maybe even Paris become very difficult places to live, we?ll have less countries at the UN giving us crap.
Note: the Gulf Stream has very little effect on the Northeast USA.

New Ice Age a Certanty!

Scientist in Vladivostok have just discoved Ice in their Vodka Martini's.

Ivan Fullabullshitinsy states that this is the start of a new Ice Age.

An ice shelf in the Arctic that had been around for about 3,000 years split and broke up draining a large fresh water lake into the ocean. The ice is now threatening to disrupt shipping lanes. The Magnetic North Pole is also moving at a pace of about 40 miles per year and is expected to "Flip Flop within the next hundred years or so, so that "North" on a compass will then be "South". The Magnetic Poles have flip-flopped many times over the past history of the earth. It may disorient migratory birds during their travles but then....won't it be nice to play golf without walking in goose droppings? Seriously, it shouldn't have much effect on the planet other than requiring manufactures paint the other end of a magnetic needle black. The birds will catch on soon enough.

Correct me if I'm wrong, , but I believe your pithy comment about 'water' was from a quote by W.C. Fields, when asked why he didn't drink water: "Because fish defecate in it!"

Your correct, W.C. Fields. Other than that line he did two others that I love.

December 7th, 1941 another star was at his house. The radio was on and they heard about the attack on Pearl Harbor. Fields quickly made a phone call. An hour or so later a truck with 20 cases of booze arrived at his house and were stacked in his living room. Fields turned to his friend and said, "I'm OK if it's a short war."

Other one was he's doing a movie and by the end of the day he's cocked. This happens every day for a week. He comes to work on the following Monday with his large thermos bottle that he called his orange juice. It was straight gin. While he's acting someone dumps the booze out and fills it with orange juice. When there is a break in the action he walks to his jug and take a pull, spits it out and says, "Who the hell put orange juice in my orange juice?"
