Default Chief Petty Officer Sensitivity Training

Chief Petty Officer Sensitivity Training

A young Navy Officer was in a bad car accident, but due to the heroics
of the hospital staff the only permanent injury was the loss of one ear.

Since he wasn't physically impaired he remained in the military and
eventually became an Admiral. However, during his career he was always
sensitive about his appearance.

One day the Admiral was interviewing three Master Chiefs for the
Command Master Chief position.

The first Master Chief was a Surface Navy type and it was a great
interview. At the end of the interview the Admiral asked him, "Do you
notice anything different about me?"

The Master Chief answered, "Why yes. I couldn't help but notice you
are missing your starboard ear, so I need to know whether this impacts
your hearing on that side." The Admiral got very angry at this lack of
tact and threw him out of his office.

The next candidate, an Aviation Master Chief, when asked this same
question, answered, "Well yes, you seem to be short one ear." The
Admiral threw him out also.

The third interview was with a Seabee Master Chief. He was
articulate, extremely sharp, and seemed to know more than the other two
Master Chiefs put together. The Admiral wanted this guy, but went ahead
with the same question. "Do you notice anything different about me?"

To his surprise the Seabee Master Chief said, "Yes. You wear contact
lenses."

The Admiral was impressed and thought to himself, what an incredibly
tactful Master Chief. "And how do you know that?" the Admiral asked.

The Seabee Master Chief replied, "Well it's pretty hard to wear
glasses with only one fuckin' ear."

New many Chiefs - some good some better. The older the better stories. Many could put away more than most. I admire the Chiefs they put up with more crap then they should have. They have a habit of making poor officer's look good - but that's why they can get away with many things - you and I would be in the brigg for.

Sensitive Chief's I knew only a few that had that Fatherly attitude who would go our of their way to wing ya. They also had a knack for getting us youngsters to hump it further each day.

When a Chief would retire it was a big loss to most of us who knew him. The old salt was on his way out and all he knew he was leaving behind. I could feel the loss not seeing them anymore and will often think back to those days when the Chief's ran the Navy and made things work better than any other enlisted individual or office in many cases.

My hat's off to those Chief's god bless them all they are the stuff many of us wish we could have become - but I didn't want to veggitate more than the 12 years I did. But
do miss the daily routine. On the line or on a ship is the only place a Navy guy wants to be I hated shore state-side duty. I would always put in for a ship or another tour to the Gulf - anything but shore duty state-side. The salt is thick in this boy and the gray ladies of the seas are really missed.
