NAVSEA press release

USNS John Lewis (T-AO 205)’s delivery follows the completion of Acceptance Trials with the Navy’s Board of Inspection and Survey to test the readiness and capability of the craft and to validate requirements.

“USNS John Lewis will provide much needed capability to the fleet as the primary fuel pipeline at sea. This is the first of a 20-ship class providing the Sailors and merchant mariners another tool to support at-sea operations.”

[Per John Lighthammer, program manager, Auxiliary and Special Mission Shipbuilding Program Office]

Command to provide diesel fuel and lubricating oil, and small quantities of fresh and frozen provisions, stores, and potable water to Navy ships at sea, and jet fuel for aircraft. The new T-AOs will add capacity to the Navy’s Combat Logistics Force and become the cornerstone of the fuel delivery system.

NASSCO is currently in production on USNS Harvey Milk (T-AO 206), USNS Earl Warren (T-AO 207), and USNS Robert F. Kennedy (T-AO 208). The future USNS Lucy Stone (T-AO 209) and USNS Sojourner Truth (T-AO 210) are under contract.

As one of the Defense Department’s largest acquisition organizations, PEO Ships is responsible for executing the development and procurement of all destroyers, amphibious ships, special mission and support ships, boats and craft.

Personal note: These supply ships are the work horses of the sea. The bring
materials needed on ships; such as; may - medical supplies - fuel - oil - food
stuffs - spare parts - medical supplies - weapons for the warships - and in all
sorts of weather. Without them we wouldn't be able to maintain operations in the
sea. Repping and Unrepping at sea is something see or be doing. While still
under power the ships are unrepped by the freighter two ships at a time.
The main carrier on one side of the supply ship and on the otherside one of
its escorts.

The carrier is guarded by its aircraft & the escorts forward and aft and port
and starboard escorts. At times they also have a submarine - but he is usually underwater in the day time and will come at night. During this process the
the ships WillyFud's are scanning the sky and the escorts as well. The sub
listen's in the water for any other ships in the area.

This process is like a dance at sea. Hard work - but team work - its a
dance we all look forward to. Without our escorts & supply ships the
world-wide protection needed by these vessels would greatly lessoned
it's our ability to cover the seas as we do. (I give them **** for their
service and hard work).
