Liberty Wing maintainer awarded Gen. Lew Allen Trophy

10/26/2012 - ROYAL AIR FORCE LAKENHEATH, England -- Master Sgt. Christopher Davis of the 48th Fighter Wing was recently announced as the 2012 Gen. Lew Allen Jr. Trophy winner and is slated to be presented the award during a ceremony at the Pentagon Oct. 31, 2012.

The trophy is awarded annually to a base-level officer and senior NCO in the aircraft, munitions or missile maintenance career fields directly involved in sortie generation.

"It was almost unbelievable (to get the trophy)," said Davis, 493rd Aircraft Maintenance Unit lead production superintendent and native of Grenada, Miss. "It's something that you don't ever really imagine being a part of."

Although Davis was surprised he won the award, not everyone in his unit shared the same sentiment.

"His work was a main reason ... the 493rd AMU propelled itself to the top of the Air Force for F-15s," said Chief Master Sgt. Brad Truesdell, 748th Aircraft Maintenance Squadron superintendant and native of Santa Clara, Calif. "I don't know if the job suited him, or he suited the job, but it was a marriage - a perfect match."

"He just excelled. The unit benefited from it," he added.

As the 493rd AMU lead production superintendent, Davis was responsible for the strategic planning and management of the unit's personnel and assets. During the award period, the 493rd AMU executed an $81 million flying hour program, which included more than 3,000 sorties, 700 of the sorties being across three deployed locations.

According to Truesdell, these numbers are significant, because of capabilities the F-15 provides.

"It (the F-15C Eagle) is an important aircraft. What we do is important. People want us, and we go places and do things that no one else can do," Truesdell said.
The 493rd AMU not only made the mission possible, but did so leading five of the nine categories across the Air Force F-15 maintenance.

Though his name will be on the award, Davis says he could not have done it alone.

"This award represents much more than any one person's contributions to the mission," he said. "It represents the hard work of all of our Airmen and NCOs across the unit are doing."*
