Default Superstitions in the field

I was thinking about this today, and remembered, no one would dare be
third on a match. Two things I kept with me were a little cross the
chaplain gave us and a Saint Christopher medal a friend sent. I was
wondering about good luck charms or the like that others might
remember from Vietnam.

Yes, As long as you have it stowed in a pocket, rather than hanging
off a strap.

Tom
I carried a small Gideons Bible in the left front pocket of my flac jacket
the whole time I was in the field. Had it stolen at Cam Ranh Bay while
waiting on the Freedom bird. I guess it just goes to show ya guys will steak
anything!

I carried a Eagle Feather most of the time hanging from my hair. In the rear
or base camp it stayed inside my shirt. I left it at the wall after I got
back with a PH, and a note. Other guys left short timers calendars drawn on
their helmet covers, head bands, lighters (Zippo), and many other things.

First time I saw a chaplain he gave me the little cross and I wore it my entire
tour and for years after I came home.

I woke up one morning after a big drunk and fight and it was gone. I thought
so much of it I went back looking for it but to no avail.

It is the only thing I ever wore around my neck with the exception of my dog
tags. And I guess it was lucky, I came home.

My buddy Bill Loveless had a monkey hand .. looked like a baby's hand
except for the hair ... I had an old mess hall stainless steel coffee cup
that I stole from Oakland Army Depot's consolidated mess the morning I
flew out the first time. Worked like a charm. Heh heh

I'll have you know I have a Left Handed Helical Retrograde Waveguide
Attenuator that I carried all over the world with me. In addition to its
ability to bounce evil mind rays, it also had the ability to stiffen the
occasional horizontal circadian low ebb containment system.

It is now bronzed, chromed and mounted in a place of honor.

The above LHHRWA description was shamelessly stolen from Miserfixit.

I always carried a chrome gas tank for a 1968 Harley Davidson
Sportster XLCH. I also brought a box of rat poison. (In case I was
taken prisoner, you know.)

I knew a grunt who carried a cut glass ash tray... when they'd set in,
he'd pull it out and set it on the edge of his fox hole.

In the favor of good cheer, brotherly love and my attempt at self-improvement,
I'm going to let that one slide without a shitty remark.

You owe me one.
