Vietnam Vet Is No Vietnam Vet

A while back, there was some character I don't recall his name off hand who claimed he served in Vietnam as an Army Infantry Soldier in the late 60s for a buddy of his. This dude claimed he didn't go through Basic or AIT, he claimed he learned everything he had to know by watching his comrades.
I was wondering if anyone rembembers this character and if you do, do you remember if what he claims is legit or was he only trying to see if he can get away with blowing a little smoke at anyone who'll listen to him ?
