Marine captain sentenced on larceny, adultery, porn charges

CAMP FOSTER, Okinawa ? A former Marine public affairs officer Monday was dismissed from the service and sentenced to 4? years in prison after pleading guilty to charges that included grand larceny, adultery and conduct unbecoming an officer.

Capt. Neil A. Peterson showed little emotion when the judge, Lt. Col. D.J. Daugherty, sentenced him.

Peterson, 32, whose last assignment was with the headquarters company of the 3rd Marine Expeditionary Force at Camp Courtney, admitted he stole about $34,000 in housing allowances between November 2000 and August 2003 by not disclosing the fact that his family had moved to South Carolina from Washington, D.C.

He also admitted he downloaded pornographic material on his government computer last July and showed the material to co-workers; deleted some of the files from the computer when he learned he was being investigated; had sex with two bargirls while on temporary duty in the Philippines while he was still married; made fraudulent adjustments to his personnel records to show he had graduated from specialty schools; and wore medals and ribbons to which he was not entitled.

In accordance with a plea agreement, Peterson will have to serve 24 months of the sentence, with the remainder suspended. He also was fined $34,000.

According to evidence presented at the hearing, Peterson, a 15-year veteran and former enlisted Marine, falsified records to show he had graduated from airborne, scuba diving, Army Ranger, Royal Marine arctic training and other schools, beginning in December 1998, prior to becoming a commissioned officer.
