Marine faces theft, desertion charges

CARLSBAD ? A man accused of deserting from the Marines was arrested early yesterday after police said he led them on a chase in a stolen car.


Jessie J. Hamill, 23, was pulled over at Tamarack Avenue and Interstate 5 about 12:20 a.m. in a car that had been reported stolen Wednesday, police said.

Police say that before Hamill could be arrested, he led a Carlsbad officer on an eight-minute pursuit along surface streets ? sometimes going the wrong way ? before he stopped in a cul-de-sac and ran.

He didn't get far. Two Sheriff's Department dogs found Hamill in a back yard, where he was arrested.

Hamill was booked on suspicion of auto theft, evading arrest and possessing methamphetamine. The Marine Corps has charged him with desertion.

Hamill was stationed at Camp Pendleton and was scheduled to be discharged Feb. 22. Hamill's grandmother said her grandson ? who served in Pakistan and Afghanistan ? apparently never returned to duty after visiting relatives in New York during the holidays.
