Late March 1954 (2nd month, Year of the Horse [Giap Ngo]): Dien Bien Phu: General Giap, having lost an estimated 2500 men thus far, attempts to strangle the surviving strongholds, moving forward every night and then digging in. The French are powerless to stop this: a shortage of artillery ammo forces them to save what shells they have for the final Viet Minh assault. SECOND INDOCHINA WAR: March 22, 1962 (17th day of the 2nd month, Year of the Tiger [Nham Dan]) (US Advisory): Operation Sunrise starts. March 22, 1966 (1st day of the 3rd month, Year of the Horse [Binh Ngo]) (US Counteroffensive): Operation Texas update. March 22, 1967 (12th day of the 2nd month, Year of the Goat [Dinh Mui]) (US Counteroffensive Phase II): An NVA battalion attacks the US Company A, 1/8th, 4th Infantry Division, near Polei Doc. March 22, 1968 (24th day of the 2nd month, Year of the Monkey [Mau Than]) (US Tet Counteroffensive): The 155th AHC's 2nd Platoon flies to Song Cau on the coast to conduct an airmobile mission for the Phu Yen Province Advisory Team where 190 PF troops are lifted in 30 sorties. March 22, 1968 (24th day of the 2nd month, Year of the Monkey [Mau Than]) (US Tet Counteroffensive): The MRF base in the My Tho River is attacked. March 16-22, 1968 (18th to 24th days of the 2nd month, Year of the Monkey [Mau Than]) (US Tet Counteroffensive): The 7/17th Cavalry Squadron performed reconnaissance missions in support of the 1st and 2nd Brigades, 4th Infantry Division and the 173rd Airborne Brigade. March 22-23, 1968 (24th and 25th days of the 2nd month, Year of the Monkey [Mau Than]) (US Tet Counteroffensive): Khe Sanh: The base receives the heaviest saturation of enemy rounds for the month - 1,109. March 22, 1971 (26th day of the 2nd month, Year of the Boar [Tan Hoi]) (US Counteroffensive, Phase VII): Operation Lam Son 719: On the escarpment about 10 miles southeast of Aloui, North Vietnamese forces attack the ARVN 147th Marine Battalion defending Fire Base Delta. After four hours' fighting, the marines are forced to evacuate the hill by chopper. |
