Ford offered hourly employees early retirement hoping to get 30,000 to accept the offer. 38.000 loyal employees jumped on the bandwagon, forcing Ford to start hiring 8,000 employees (Bloomberg report dated Nov 29, 2006)

Bob
Your talking about the last factory closings not this round.
And your also right in that people are not loyal to anything but themselves and there family. I remember when brand loyalty meant something. IF You were a Chevy guy, there was no changing to Ford or Dodge, and that Guy would also look at you like you were nuts if you wanted to sell him a Toyota?
But then, The Buggywip manufacturers went out of business also.
In the case of the auto that people own, We as US citizens can still do something about the next time there is a layoff at GM, Ford, Chrysler. At the very least we citizens should look at a Ford, Chrysler or GM before we runnout and snag the Isuzu, or whatever. I had a race the other day against a Yota. I beat him by about 15 car lenths, and a 2 lieder is a soft drink not an engine.

Default Yokahama Bob (bOOger Lee )

How much of your Yota truck was built in America? The high percentage would probably make you more Toledo Bob than Yokohama Bob? And for those Fords, Chevvies, and other "American" brands - wonder how many parts were built Japan, Mexico, East Bugtussle, or elsewhere than the USA? Economics, young grasshopper, economics! Now, go check the resale value of your Yota vs. a comparably equipped Ford.

Although very brand loyal, and a buyer of "American" vehicles, if Ford, GM, Dailmer-Chrysler, were building cars and trucks Americans really wanted, they wouldn't be having problems. You wouldn't be able to keep them on the showroom floors. When Ford introduced the T-Bird, there was a waiting list to get them, same same Corvette. The consumers decide, which is the backbone of a capitalist society. When the Big 3 produce something that most Americans want, it'll sell. If they continue to produce what they are producing, it won't. I don't know anybody that owns a Japanese washer or dryer. Forgot one other thing. In the 70's Honda was dumping motorcycles in America. You could buy one cheaper in NC than Japan. Harley Davidson was in big trouble and got bought out by AMF. Quality went down and Harley Davidson was a hair away from bankruptcy. Well, AMF wanted rid of H-D so the families bought it back, produced motorcycles that people wanted, and now sell the shit out of them. Although the dumping was unfair, American industry pulled themselves out of the fire. Time for the Big 3 to take a lesson from this.

Roger your last! "If you build it, they will buy it," is a continuing workable capitalist mantra. Those industries that forget it are nothing more than dinosaurs stumbling around, looking for a tar pit to fall into. NOTE TO SCAMP: send us some of your insights about how capitalism is working to replace the broke pig of socialism in the countries you have graced.

All
Just because you assemble a product in The USA doesn't mean you get a "Made in USA" label. There are rules and regulations for that little label. I printed the Rules on one of these threads.
Pack. Just because Harlie's are made a little better doesn't mean there good. Harlie's Suck as far as down time for repairs. The reason why Harlie's are selling is because of Fan Loyalty. No self respecting biker gang would be caught dead on a Honda, no matter the quality. And I believe the same should apply to Ford, GM, and Chrysler.
And the challenge from SS is to compare resale value of a Yota and a Ford, I would say Challenge excepted for a few rules.
1. Comparable equipped
2. Comparable priced.
In other words a 1/2 ton, 4 door, auto, V8, Against the same equipment. Id bet on the Ford.
All though Jap cars and trucks run just fine and have very good reliability, To me its a matter of pride, Any Honda runs better than any Harley, But Fan loyalty and pride are worth a bunch.
US citizens want to own Jap cars and trucks, Hell, go right ahead, Have 2. But when an American company is threatened by a Jap company, then I guess its time to choose . No one is telling anyone what brand to buy just like Harley owners can choose to go to the Honda dealer if they want to. Anyone can also fly a raising sun in there front yard instead on the Stars and Bars, If they want to.
