Default Baseball

The local basball team recently came through our little town. They made their presense known by the trail they left. As I woke up at about 1:30 Saturday morning, I hear a thump and a car drive off. Getting the local paper later that morning, I see the results of mailbox baseball. Fockers got me...and my neighbors. Troopers came and checked it out and indicated that it was a blunt instument that caused the damage. No S##t! I was looking for stab wounds. A drive by whacking if I do say myself.

I can only hope someone rats on a friend.

Story #1:
A friend of mine was a victim of such a baseball team. It was about 9PM when he heard the "whack" of bat-on-box. He rushed out to see a car about 100 yards away that had stopped, the driver apparently speaking to the driver of an opposing vehicle, then both cars drove off.

The next day a high school age boy and his father showed up. The boy had been the driver of the "team car" and it was his father, driving in the opposite direction and stumbling upon the game, who had stopped him. The boy offered to either repair the box or buy my friend a new one. My friend chose the latter option.

The boy did the right thing, but would he have done it had he not been caught? Somehow, I doubt it.

Story #2:
About 15 years ago in my old home town, two girls, out on a howl with daddy's car and a fifth of daddy's Jack Daniels decided to play a little "mailbox baseball". The passenger had knocked a few homers and was about to try another. Unfortunately, neither she nor the driver noticed the telephone ball just beyond the mailbox. The batter's head hit the pole and she fell back into the car. The driver thought her friend had just passed out and continued to drive around for awhile until she realized something was wrong. When she couldn't revive her friend, she drove to the hospital where the girl was declared dead.
