Question The Pentagon Papers

Hi Guys--Don't know if this will come thru, new at this. just wondering if anybody else saw the TV movie Pentagon Papers, suppose to be based on a true story, don't know how much was fact or fiction, but sure made us out to be sucked in by the goverment. Still very confused about the whole thing.

It's a true story

I read the entire books years ago. It is a pretty sordid tale of government duplicity and lies. And yes, they knew from the start it was useless.

Default A Few Additions..

... to the Pentagon Papers might be in order. While the government of SVN may not have been the paragon of virtue, it hd not committed the atrocities of its northern counterpart, a point either glossed over, or ignored completely. Nor is there adequate mention of the fact that irrespective of the agreement, all Viet Minh/VC/NVA cadres did not leave the South as required. When the partition of what was then Indochina occurred, almost 1 million boat people, Generation 1, left the communist north and fled to the South; most of these were primarily of the Roman Catholic persuation, knowing that they woul dnot be able to practice their religion were they to remain.

Ellsberg had an agenda, not all together altruistic, about releasing the Pentagon Papers, and the fact that he betrayed the trust of his mentor at the Rand Corp., exposed his family by coopting their involvement, and potentially placed American warriors in greater danger makes him much less than the hero as the show tried to protray him.

Unhappy

For further reading from one of our nations most decorated veterans Colonel "Bud" George Day you might also read his account of his POW experience "Return with Honor." I think he sheds a lot of light on the authenticity of the Pentagon Papers and believe he can say from an insiders point of view. He and the other POW's were victimized by the propaganda and political nature of the war. Seek the truth and explore all the facts. We never want to repeat Vietnam! Know why.

Default The Pentagon Papers

These were written by persons inside the Pentagon to not only give a history of what had happened in Southeast Asia but some analysis of what went wrong. It was an official study sanctioned by the Pentagon.
