STRATEGIC DECEPTION:

PHILIP SLAUGHTER
Battle of the 9th of June, Petersburg, Virginia:

S I G N I F I C A N T STRATEGIC DECEPTION -- 9 June 1864!

"Philip Slaughter, a black musician, had formed his small band on the heights and throughout the latter stages of the action had vigorously played "Dixie" and other melodies to simulate several regimental bands." "June 9, 1864 was indeed a community victory."

Ref: "The Petersburg Campaign", The Battle of Old Men and Young Boys, June 9, 1864, William G. Robertson; Glenn, "Cockade City," p.7; Scott and Wyatt, Petersburg Story,p.178; Archer, "Defense of Peterburg," pp. 114, 116.

This battle's history has been told by noted historians and City of Petersburg since that eventfull day. This battle's STRATEGIC DECEPTION, along with Ed Moore's comparison with action at Gettysburg on his website ( ww2.control.com/~emoore/p-burg ) , and the varied participants, provides a COMPELLING story relating to the 9 1/2 months of "Death in the Trenches" "at Petersburg." Robertson did a great job!

This battle's historical "thread and tie" in the establishment of our National Memorial Day today is well documented by historians. You will find this history in the Museums of the City of Petersburg and on the bookshelf.

Ref: "The Petersburg Campaign, The Battle of Old Men and Young Boys, June 9, 1864, William G. Robertson, Preface; Memoirs of Mrs. John A. Logan; etc., etc.

"For one hundred and twenty-five years (in 1989) Petersburg has remembered that day both in fact and in legend, but the nation at large is unfamiliar with the events of June 9. It is an important story, a story of heroism and sacrifice WHICH BELONGS TO ALL AMERICANS, and which the Cockade City (Petersburg) is PROUD to share with the rest of the nation." William G. Robertson

Douglas Southal Freeman called this day "Possibly the unique battle of the entire war."

"......it set the stage for the siege that followed, much like Buford's Cavalry at McPherson's Ridge set up the Battle of Gettysburg....."
Ed Moore, www2.control.com/~emoore/p-burg

FIND THIS HISTORY AND STORY ON OUR BATTLEFIELDS IF YOU CAN! It is an eye-opener and a mind-opener in the "WHOLE story" of the Battles for Petersburg and the results endured.
