Angry Congress must investigate China's ties to the US defense industry

Congress must investigate China's ties to the US defense industry
By: Michael J. Pappas - Washington Examiner News - 11-17-22 06:00 AM

At a press conference earlier this month, President Joe Biden raised eyebrows when he said , ďElon Muskís cooperation and/or technical relationships with other countries is worthy of being looked at. Whether or not he is doing anything inappropriate ó Iím not suggesting that,Ē he said, ďIím suggesting itís worth being looked at, and thatís all Iíll say.Ē

Biden is right, and itís nothing personal against Musk. In fact, the presidentís comments werenít really about the SpaceX, Tesla, and Twitter head at all. Rather, they were about ensuring the United States keeps a broadly consistent, air-tight defense shield against one of Americaís leading adversaries: the Peopleís Republic of China.

While itís not necessarily problematic for Americaís national security, the richest man in the world ó who has met with CCP leadership and taken over $1 billion in loans from China, which is home to Teslaís second-largest market ó has become heavily connected to the communist nation. Muskís business ventures have thrust him into a vital national security role, and itís fair for the federal government to worry about what the ambitious and predatory CCP might be able to get its hands on with its close proximity to him. Just this week, for example, a report found that China is emulating SpaceXís designs to build a reusable mega-rocket.

Thatís why Rep. Chris Stewart (R-UT), a senior member of the House Intelligence Committee, is seeking confidential briefings on any vulnerabilities, while Sen. Marco Rubio (R-FL), the ranking member of the Senate Intelligence Committee, also introduced legislation that would ensure U.S. contractorsí CCP connections donít interfere with Americaís geopolitical goals.

Maybe Musk is unintentionally creating vulnerabilities for the U.S.; maybe he isnít. But the country would be remiss if it didnít engage in responsible due diligence to find out for sure one way or the other.

At the same time, however, this conversation shouldnít start and end with Elon Musk . It should be extensive and extend to all the U.S.ís national security contractors.

When it comes to defense, Chinaís espionage operation is second-to-none. The country is doing everything from planting backdoors in our technology to having CCP-trained spies work with and develop relational ties to the American national security influencers from whom it seeks to steal defense secrets.

This problem is only getting worse. A recent Center for Strategic & International Studies (CSIS) survey found 160 publicly-reported instances of Chinese espionage from 2000-2021 ó 24% occurred between 2000-2009, while 76% occurred between 2010-2021. If thatís not enough to convince one of the growing scope of this problem, consider that the U.S. just charged many with Chinese espionage, while just days ago, the U.S. Attorneyís Office for the Southern District of California sentenced a former U.S. Army helicopter pilot with more than 20 years of military service and experience as a defense contractor for acting as an agent of China.

FBI Director Chris Wray put it best : ďThe greatest long-term threat to our nationís information and intellectual property, and to our economic vitality, is the counterintelligence and economic espionage threat from China.Ē

This problem isnít going away, so Biden is doing the right thing by following Republican intelligence officialsí lead in addressing it head-on.

As Washington looks to continue bulletproofing the U.S. defense industry from Chinaís espionage machine in the next Congress, the congressional intelligence committees should begin holding hearings and briefings to deepen its understanding of this problem, while the White House should instruct the Department of Defense and all relevant agencies to vet its contractors in ways that ensure their relationships with adversarial nations donít pose any national security risks. Itís whatís necessary to keep the American people safe and the CCP at bay.

Personal note: One thing about China I know for sure they are excellent in reverse
engineering. They can make it - and sell it - for far less than any country in the
They do it faster and make minor alterations with slight improvements but the
whole concept is they've take away American jobs and make the product for far
less cost - and BAM - any US made products are now made overseas for far less
and at time may even work better that the original design.
They've done this to us since the late 1950's and took American jobs away from
our own folks. (Hence layoffs and shut downs in the US). Unemployment!
China capitalizer's on the backs of other countries designs. They can make it
quicker and for far less money. They can reverse engineer just about anything
and still make a profit for far less than US made products.
They are not dummies they - rather they are manipulators which favors
their countries/people's & gaines. Hence plenty of job openings in China!
We've seen this for decades - so has Musk - why do you think he's made so
much money. China engineer's are highered - and they figure it out - and
Musk is now richer than many in the world - with some exceptions! He's a
great manipulator and has learned much from the Chinese in the process!

O Almighty Lord God, who neither slumberest nor sleepest; Protect and assist, we beseech thee, all those who at home or abroad, by land, by sea, or in the air, are serving this country, that they, being armed with thy defence, may be preserved evermore in all perils; and being filled with wisdom and girded with strength, may do their duty to thy honour and glory; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
