Students, teachers, parents and honored guest gathered Wednesday, November 10 in the Lakenheath Middle School gymnasium, RAF Feltwell, to honor those that serve in the military and remember those that have made the ultimate sacrifice.
The ceremony included an emotional speech from Roger Bacon of Woodbridge, Suffolk, whose son Major Matthew Bacon was killed by a roadside bomb in Basra, Iraq in 2005.
“The military life for Matthew was the only option,” Bacon said of his son who served in the British Military Intelligence Corps. Major Bacon was described as an avid sportsman that enjoyed the challenge of physical exercise and an academic that enjoyed studying and in his spare time was working towards a law degree.
Other guest speakers included Mrs. Diana Dore, a Feltwell resident, who paid tribute to her great –grandfather’s service in World War II, Colonel Cassie Barlow, Commander, 48th Mission Support Group, and Colonel Chad Manske, Commander, 100th Air Refueling Wing. In the spirit of being in school Manske brought a PowerPoint presentation highlighting what service means to him and issued a homework assignment, “Think about what you can do for a veteran, hug a veteran, say thank you to a veteran.”
After the speeches guest were treated to performances from students including music and dance.
