ROYAL AIR FORCE LAKENHEATH, England -- The 48th Medical Group education and training section officially opened the new Medical Training Complex during a grand opening ceremony May 1, 2013.

The section, which provides education and training for Liberty Medics and various other personnel, now has two buildings specifically designated for education and training.

"It (the 48th MDG Medical Training Complex) gives us more realistic training in a safe environment without causing harm to patients," said Maj. Heather Perez, 48th MDG chief of education and training and native of Barnstable, Mass. The capabilities the complex brings to the mission will help ensure "that our medics are current and competent to
treat patients in peace time and in war time."

The new training complex boasts seven high-fidelity manikins, two high-fidelity pediatric simulators and a number of virtual reality task trainers, which allow trainers to add inputs to simulations from the complex's command post while recording the responses of trainees.

The high-fidelity manikins have computer chips that allow them to not only receive inputs, but also to register the responses from the trainees such as what medication and dose is being applied.

"We train on these manikins to prepare ourselves for down range or even in the hospital ... to perfect the orchestration of what has to happen," said Staff Sgt. Matthew Kosemund, 48th Medical Group NCO in charge of medical simulations, and native of Konawa, Okla. "We are training our health care providers as teams."

"When we don't work as a team, we fail as individuals," he added.

Although the complex just opened and is a leap forward in 48th MDG capabilities, Kosemund said the section will keep enhancing the training experience.

"If we can't buy it, we will invent it," Kosemund said. "Our motto is 'innovate and educate.' That's what we are going to do."
