AF names selects for FY18 Inter-American Squadron Officer School

JOINT BASE SAN ANTONIO-RANDOLPH (AFNS) -- Eight active duty officers will attend the Inter-American Squadron Officer School, or ISOS, at the Inter-American Air Forces Academy, Joint Base San Antonio-Lackland, in fiscal year 2018.

Those selected are Captains Hugo Alarcon, Air Force Space Command; Logan Dixon, Air Force Special Operations Command; Jason Fischbach, Air Combat Command; Arteaga Gonzalez, Air Force Materiel Command; Catherine Hynie, ACC; 1st Lt. Brooke, O’Brien-Meza, ACC; Captains Karen Rubinsantos, Air Education and Training Command; and Alexander Wilson, AFSPC. Eleven alternates were also selected.

The eight-week course is equivalent to the Squadron Officer School taught by Air University at Maxwell Air Force Base, Alabama, which is designed to develop dynamic Airmen ready to lead air, space, and cyberspace power in an expeditionary war-fighting environment. However, ISOS is taught entirely in Spanish and adapted for Latin American and U.S. Air Force captains who possess the language capabilities.

“The inclusion of Air Force officers in this program enriches the pool of candidates available to serve in positions requiring interaction with Latin American countries and their military forces,” said Kris Hunter, Officer Developmental Education deputy chief at the Air Force’s Personnel Center.

Students practice leadership and managerial skills using lessons in military ethics, Air Force core values and human rights.

“They also develop their knowledge of the use of airpower, including basic theories of warfare and the increasing role of aerospace and information systems in the joint environment,” Hunter said.

Hunter said the selection process for ISOS is extremely competitive, as those selected will honorably represent their unit and the Air Force in an American ambassadorial capacity to Latin American students.

Program graduates will also earn primary developmental education credit through Air University.
