Default Non Profit........

David & I would really like to make the patriofiles a non-profit org. We know that this subject has crossed the forums before. We need some help though. David & I had the paperwork but cant make heads or tails of it. The bottom line - anyone know how exactly how to do this that can give us a big hand? Please contact me via email or PM.

Post I could help you in Washington!

In Washington you have to file as a non-profit with the Secretary of State. They send us the forms and we check the appropriate boxes. And, send them a check. We have to have a constitutions and bylaws declaring our purpose and goals as a non profit. As a church its real easy. We also have to apply with the IRS and get a non-profit number tax number.

Bernadette,

I think I can help. I have a nonprofit, plus my wife is a Lawyer. In NC it was not too bad.

Let me know, maybe e-mail the forms and I can give you some thoughts. I'm sure they are asking for mission, goals and all that crap. Just keep it simple. It really is easy to become a nonprofit. Plus you can take tax deductible donations while in the process.

You'll get there, just let me know if we can help.

Thumbs up

The IRS requirements are national. State requirements differ from state to state. Once we got our IRS number I have never filled out anything for the IRS again. I understand the IRS doesn't mess with Churches too much but other non-profits are under close scrutiney.

Good Advice, Let the Lawyers do the work.

Thank you Keith - maybe you can help with the mission statement that I think we need?
FlyBoy - My job today is searching down the correct forms. I will PM you when I get them.

I think once you file with the SOS and the IRS forms can be downloaded online. It's pretty simple if I remember right.

Keith, I really don't think there is much accountability required of any nonprofit these days. I don't file anything because we're under 25K. Look at Jesse Jackson, the IRS could care less about his illegal activity. Of course that may be a PC issue too.

I could site other examples, but won't.

Still need a running mate? What party?

I thought that one was easy. It has a checklist, which helps. I know the instructions are not well written, but fill it out however you interpret it. If they have questions, thay will ask.

And please, if you have any specific questions, e-mail me and ask. I'll do all I can to help.
