i joined the army when i was 17 i opted at that time for special forces, in 1968.

in jan 69 at age 18 i was at basic and ait ft. polk la. after that i went to jump school and upon completion i was tested for special forces and sent to jfk center for unconventional warfare. i started there at about 18 and a half years old.

after completing phase 1 i donned my beret and was issued the rank of e-5.

when i finished all my training i was issued 11b4s and 11c4s mos's and sent to vietnam macvsog ccn, june 1969 i arrived, i did not volunteer for that unit, i was 19 years old.

i went on several missions as a strap hanger and was sent to long tahn for recon team leader school training, upon completion i was sent back to ccn recon company. after i was wounded i was sent to b-36 mobile strike force (fank) long hai, where i helped train the cambodian army. i cycled through 2 companies that i was responsible for and led them in combat.

in june of 1971 i returned home and was assigned to the 82nd airborne charlie company 2nd of the 508 where i was the morter platoon squad leader, i was 20 and later that year i was discharged before my 21st bday.

i'm a life time member of the special operations association, the special forces association, the dav and the special forces list.

this is as close as i remember the details, its been a loooong time ago.

God bless

Interesting thread.
For your information, Army Special Forces did, indeed, recruit from both Basic Training and AIT during the 1960's.
I was recruited by an SF recruiter at Ft. Ord, California in November, 1967. I was a PFC at the time. I had enlisted RA-Unassigned for Infantry OCS. Did Basic at Ft. Campbell, was given an OCS class date, then attended the Leadership Preparation Course at the Army DI School at Ft. Ord. Then Infantry AIT at Ft. Ord. Prior to completion of AIT, they froze the OCS program. Those of us with cancelled class dates were given the option of deploying to Germany or we could take a battery of tests for Army Special Forces. I chose SF, passed the tests and was sent to jump school in December, 1967. I started Special Forces Training Group in January, 1968, and completed the Medical Specialist Course and Phase III in October. I made Spec-4 while in Training Group. I was assigned to a special weapons A-Team of the 6th Special Forces Group, made E-5, and stayed there until July, 1969, when I called Mrs. Alexander, the Pentagon Special Forces Assignment Coordinator (that is probably not her official title; CRS at times) and asked to be sent to Viet Nam. She complied, and I arrived at Nha Trang's 5th SFG Headquarters in late September.

I was assigned to an "A-Camp", and , yes, we called them that, manned by an A-Team in northern III Corps, eightyfive miles or so due north of Saigon.

The individual you know as "FarmBoy" was there when I arrived and he was there when I left seven months later. He received a chest wound in November or early December and was med-evacked out, and returned to duty a few weeks later.

He and I and hundreds, if not thousands, of young first tour NCO's were accepted into Special Forces in the 1960's and 70's. He is "S-Qualified", and everything he's written here about his service is accurate.

Some of you might think him an asshole, but he's OUR asshole. He's a member in good standing of The Special Forces List, an internet group of over six hundred former and active duty U. S. Army Special Forces Soldiers. One does not join that group just by filling out a profile. One has to be thoroughly vetted. If no one on The List knows you, you don't get in without providing a bonafide DD-214 and being interviewed by a member.

I'm well aware that others have come here today to vouch for FarmBoy and been banned for life for their efforts. Ban me if you wish, but you've been mislead about SF qualifications during the Viet Nam War. And, you're wrong about FarmBoy and RandyC. They aren't the same individual, they aren't in Kansas. Neither am I.

You can read about me at my website, the URL to which I cannot post here as I am new to the site. Just Google "Robeson Cutlery Company". Click on the link that has the capital "R" in it. It's an antique pocketknife site, but you'll find a photo of myself, some other Team mates and Martha Raye from November, 1969.

You guys are walking all over your dicks and don't even know it. Some of you owe FarmBoy and Randy, a SOG vet, an apology.

Default They SF recruited specialized MOS's

I was recruited for Special Forces in 1969 with an MOS of 71M20, I was also an E-5 at the time and wasn't interested because I was almost ready to get out. I was told I would have had to go to jump school and take some special forces classes. But with three months left I wasn't interested and I had no plans to re-up. I wanted to get married and complete my education. That being said, I know they did recruit certain MOS's.

Default Sid,

I know Sid, I have met Sid personally, I like Sid, Sid is for real. Those who speak out against Sid are most likely wannabees. Sid is my friend. David you did good by kicking those guys off the site.

Default That is very easy.

They needed some chaplains assistants. They wanted E-5 in rank or better. All I know is that I was contacted about the possibility.

I know we had a jump qualified chaplain in the 6th Special Forces Group at Ft. Bragg in 1969. He wore a beret, but I don't remember if he had a full flash or a bar. He was a major. If we had a Group chaplain, maybe they needed assistants, too.

He and I and a whole C-130 load of jumpers went into the trees on a night jump into the Pisgah National Forest in the Spring of '69. He used some rather colorful language while crashing through the tree tops.

Default Chaplain's Assistant

We had a SF group stationed at Ft. Devens, Mass for a time. I had done some work for the SF chaplain. He was MAJ. I know he needed an Assistant. My guess is that he had SF contact me.

All;
I do not know Sid Herndon. I do not doubt Sid Herndon. He is not an issue for me.

What is an issue for me is how this site and a fellow SF Team mate and wounded Viet Nam veteran have come to such a blow-up just because he used a green beret as an avatar, was then accused of being a Wannbee and banned from the site because no one here knows what the qualifications were for SF service during the 60's and 70's.

Just because your administrator's IP search stopped at some server in Wichita, through which I suspect FarmBoy's and RandyC's posts were routed, doesn't mean they have the same IP address, are one and the same individual, or live in the same house.

Ya'll need to clear this up, stop calling fellow vets, "SumBitches", and shake hands. This is ridiculous.
