Default Gas prises

Well they are back level with Diesel again. None of us Gas uses were caring when the gas was 190 and diesel was still 235. It don't feel so good now , does it.
Our wooooose administration get off there collective wooooose butts and lower restrictions on new refineries there would be more refineries built, and just what do you think would happen to the price of Gas when there is to much on the market. In the 80s when the new restrictions were placed on new refineries the oil companies decided not to build any new refineries and the only way to add to there output was to buy up the small oil companies and use there old refineries. Thats why you see a few huge oil companies controlling most of the oil refining in the US.
If the restrictions were lifted tomorrow there would be a landslide of New oil companies and along with that doubling or tripling the refining capacity of the oil . A free enterprise system will work for the consumer, if you let it work. The refining capacity of the oil companies in the US is at it's max and the consumption of the refined oil is equal to that of the maximum capasity . So whats the incentive to lower prices? In any free market the product available has to be more then the consumer wants , if not, the price will only go up.

Hear is an example of what I am talking about.

Lets take a product made in the US such as , Diapers.
There are 50 diaper companies in the US making 10-20 % more diapers than the consumer needs, The prices are low and competition is high, Now along comes the California tree huggers and legislate into law a new set of regulations for the manufacture of diapers because of the plastic exterior of the diaper. The diaper companies go to court and the court says that the new restrictions will apply to any new diaper manufacturing assembly lines. Now diaper companies are not going to make any new assembly lines because of the new restrictions, so , the way they increase there diaper production and the bottom line for there stock holders , is to buy up diaper companies that have assembly lines under old restrictions , and what you end up with then is not 50 diaper companies competing for the consumer, but , 5 or 6 diaper companies that now control the output of diapers in the US and that output is going to be just above the total amount of diapers needed by US consumers.
The 5-6 companies have a hold on the US consumer because of restrictions on new diaper manufacturing assembly lines and the ONLY way that will change is lift the restrictions or win in court (that all assembly lines comply to new restrictions) .

The oil Refining in this country is at it's max, not because of supply, but because the oil companies only have so many refineries that don't have the new restrictions and the new restriction are a huge hindrance to any NEW oil company getting into the business, You know, If it cost a Billion $ to get permits and studies and long term environmental impact and etc. etc, before you even start to build a refinery, just where are you going to find investors to put up huge amounts of money for years with no return and no grantee that the tree huggers wont find some "one eyed spotted owl" on the land and then you can't build anything.
Having $1.00 gal gas is not beyond our limits, It's really rather simple. Release the restrictions and the free enterprise system will take care of the rest.
Another way is the World Trade Organization (WTO) .
You go to some third world country (like Cuba) and start refining oil and your refineries have no restriction and therefor can produce as much gasoline as they wish without fear of some califonia tree huger telling them they can not. Then sell there gas to the US consumer, (just as china sells there stuff, or japan)
US oil companies would suffer the same fate as any US company competing with a non restriction company.

I'm done

I hear Chavez down in Venezuela refines all the Gasoline he needs and a lot of us too for dimes on the dollar vs what the US refineries have to because of our green regulations. And he is the darling of the anti-war movement and Cindy Sheehan! Lets confuse Joe and Sally Public and convert to the Metric system for selling Gas by the Litter! Then we can sell Gas for $1.00 a liter and the ignorant for a while will think the price dropped till they see how fast the pumps are turning the 1$ amount and 56.85$ shows up for the purchase of 15 gallons of gas for your SUV.

here is a quick and easy Liter to Gallons converter http://www.paulnoll.com/Oregon/Canni...er-liters.html

RR, thats a whole dollar more then here in Georgia

Calif emissions are so strict current electric cars will be obsolete for sale in the year 2010, The cars that run on Hydrogen have a little longer shelf life but the water vapor they release still is considered for emissions testing and soon they will be non available for sale because on a hot humid day water vapor attaches to carbon emissions and forms smog. I can't fathom what they will be driving in California when emission standards keep rising??

I thought $2.35 was a lot,
I'm glade all the tree huggers live on the left side, and are paying for there regulations. Maybe if they let a few more illegals across. And I think there is a snail that only has slime on it's left side that needs some protection, maybe a billion$ or so for a long term study.

Default $2.79 here in Oregon

And Oregon doesn't have the environmental restrictions on gas California does and there's no refineries in the whole state--the county I lived in in CA, Contra Costa county, had 4 major refineries.
How does this happen? Why is Oregon gas cheaper than CA when there's no refineries in the whole state? Gasoline is cheaper in Portland, Red Bluff and Chico then it is in the SF Bay area or Sacramento--how does THAT happen? they're farther away from the refineries, as is Oregon. This is against any theory of capitalism.
The answer, of course, lies in market manipulation. As you point out, a few major companies own the whole shooting match. This is anti competitive which is anti free enterprise. Think not? try going out and starting a new oil company. Given that there's only X amount of oil to be pumped and refined, that means they have to maximise their profits before the oil runs out. And thats exactly what they do.
Notice that, concurrently with the price of gas going up, the oil companies are posting HUGE profits, setting new records every year, both in oil pumped and profits achieved. This is not coincidental.
SO oil production is at its max and the oil companies are making more than ever. This makes the oil company execuctives happy and they get HUGE bonuses (the retiring CEO of Texaco got half a billion) but the consumer, as always, gets screwed.
And all without virtually ANY expansion at all. So why should they expand when they don't have to produce more to make a profit, only raise their prices? keeping supply low while demand grows increases their profits with less investment.
So they don't have that much incentive to expand and whatever they do will be be behind the demand curve because they make a better profit that way. The fact that they make plenty of money even with restrictions, is proven by the fact that they make HUGE profits every year.
So restrictions don't stop the oil companies from making more money at all, they can't compain when theyre posting record profits--but they do anyway.
The reason they aren't building new refineries is they make more money not doing it.

I love the trees on my property, all several thousand of them. I think I'll go out and hug one now

James
Oregon has no oil refineries, are you kidding?
Just a few, are listed below,
The big oil companies are making money, Thats kind of the reason people buy oil company stocks, to make money. But if you look at a top 100 money making companies in the US, I would guess the top 4-5 would not be oil. But there is no complaints that these companies make money? Free enterprise works when there is a surplus of the product, and there are many makers of the product, The restrictions on new refineries is the reason there is no surplus.
