Islam convert gets 35 years in plot to attack mall

CHICAGO - A 24-year-old convert to Islam has been sentenced to 35 years in prison for plotting to set off hand grenades in a crowded shopping mall during the Christmas season.

Derrick Shareef must serve 30 of those years — with five off for good behavior — unless he can get an appeals court to reduce the sentence.

He was arrested in 2006 on charges of scheming to use weapons of mass destruction at the Cherryvale Mall in the northern Illinois city of Rockford.

Federal Judge David Coar said Tuesday he didn't believe Shareef was evil. But he said people could have been severely hurt if federal agents hadn't broken up the plot.

Shareef described himself as a devout Muslim who once admired Osama bin Laden but has now realized violence is wrong.

The greatest threat to peace and security in this nation, in the world is radical Muslims. You would think that we would get it as a nation, but 9 -11 was seven years ago and our sensibilities have been numbed. Does this blithering idiot of a judge know anything about grenades? Gosh, to think that people might be seriously hurt if a grenade goes off? Can you spell D-E-A-D? And of course the perp is evil - anybody who would want to throw a grenade into any group of civilians is not only evil but an idiot, despite what some on this site have as their signature. The judge should be impeached and convicted of utter stupidity.
