U.S. NAVY NORFOLK, Va. (Tribune News Service) — A Florida congresswoman who leads a committee on climate change will tour Naval Station Norfolk, the Port of Virginia and other parts of Norfolk and Chesapeake affected by flooding on Monday. U.S. Rep. Kathy Castor, D-Fla., is the chair of the House Select Committee on the Climate Crisis. The committee is charged with making climate policy recommendations to Congress that "achieve substantial and permanent reductions in pollution and other activities that contribute to the climate crisis," according to a news release. The committee is supposed to publish a set of policy recommendations by March 31, 2020. Castor will be hosted by Democratic U.S. Rep. Elaine Luria, whose district includes Naval Station Norfolk. The largest naval base in the world experiences recurrent flooding and Navy officials are incorporating sea-level rise into their plans for new construction projects on the installation. Luria and Castor will receive briefings on military construction projects oriented toward resilience, the Defense Critical Infrastructure Program and Port of Virginia projects, a news release said. ___ (c)2019 The Virginian-Pilot (Norfolk, Va.)
