North Korean leader Kim Jong Un has held a meeting with top military officials to discuss steps to “bolster up” the country’s armed forces, state news agency KCNA reported on Sunday, amid looming threats of confrontation with the United States.

Kim presided over an enlarged meeting of the Central Military Commission (CMC) to give a briefing “on the complicated internal and external situation,” KCNA said.

It added that Kim discussed “important issues for decisive improvement of the overall national defence and core matters for the sustained and accelerated development of military capability for self-defence.”

KCNA did not specify when the meeting took place, but the announcement comes amid heightened tensions between Pyongyang and Washington over North Korea’s nuclear programme and repeated missile tests.

The leadership of North Korea has made clear it has no interest in new disarmament talks with the US, as long as Washington refuses to lift sanctions.

Earlier this month, Pyongyang’s vice minister of foreign affairs said the end the year marks a deadline for the US to offer concessions.

It is “entirely up to the US what Christmas gift it will select,” Ri Thae Song said.

Negotiations have stalled after a failed summit between US President Donald Trump and the North Korean leader in February in Vietnam. The two sides were unable to agree on the next steps toward the easing of tensions, and North Korea has since fired a number of short-range missiles into the sea.
