The crimes committed between 1995 and 1996 made international headlines, not only because of their horrifying nature but because of the stunning incompetence revealed in the investigation. It led to one of Belgium's worst political crises and to high-level resignations. Some 300,000 people took to the streets in protest, and the $6 million trial is the most expensive, sensational and heavily secured in modern Belgian history. I was used, says man charged over schoolgirl murders
Convicted child rapist Marc Dutroux, whose trial over a spate of schoolgirl killings that shocked Belgium eight years ago started yesterday, claims he was "used" by others. Dutroux, 47, is standing trial alongside his wife Martin, 44, his "right-hand man" Michel Lelievre, 32, and a fourth suspect, Michel Nihoul, who all face charges of kidnapping and complicity in the crimes. Nihoul has claimed that Dutroux was the "linchpin" of the killings. But Dutroux retorted: "(You are asking me) whether Nihoul is implicated in the abductions? Obviously. He is the linchpin. Belgians have waited impatiently for the trial. But it seems unlikely to answer the key question that has split society - did Dutroux and his accomplices act alone or were they part of some wider pedophile ring, possibly with high-society protection?

Dutroux not working alone, jury told
Suspected child murderer Marc Dutroux was not working alone but was part of a network, the public prosecutor at his trial in Arlon told the jury on Tuesday. Reading out a 56-page statement summing up the events leading up to Dutroux's 1996 arrest, Royal Procurer Michel Bourlet said Dutroux was not an "isolated predator". Bourlet argued that Dutroux's co-defendants, Belgian businessman Michel Nihould, his ex-wife Michelle Martin and his former sidekick Michel Lelievre, all stand accused of helping him kidnap six young girls, four of whom later died. The prosecutor did not however comment on rumours that the four were just a small part of a wider mafia-controlled child porn network, as Dutroux himself has insisted repeatedly. However, the judge presiding over the trial did agree on Tuesday that the court could consider certain documents linked to a separate and ongoing investigation into w! hether Dutroux was indeed part of a bigger criminal network.

Accused murderer faces trial in Belgium, at last
After Dutroux's arrest it transpired not only that he had been under surveillance, but also that he had served six years of a 12-year jail term for child rape. The prison governor described him as a psychopath. The Charleroi gendarmerie were told by an informer that he was deepening his cellars to conceal children before selling them abroad. But no report was ever filed. For them and many others, the crucial question is whether Dutroux is telling the truth in hinting that he procured girls for a network of establishment figures, and that a massive cover-up is going on. This was the thrust of revelations by a woman called Regina Louf, who told police of child sex parties involving judges, politicians, bankers and members of the royal family. But her stories of sadism, bestiality and murder have been widely dismissed as deranged fantasy.

Marc Dutroux, who stands accused of child killings in Belgium, has a criminal record going back 25 years. In 1979, Mr Dutroux received the first of a series of convictions for theft, violent muggings, drug-dealing and trading in stolen cars. Sexual crimes came later - in 1986, Mr Dutroux and his then-wife Michelle Martin were arrested for the abductions and rape of five girls, for which they were both imprisoned. Dutroux, a convicted child rapist, was arrested for the abduction, rape and murder of several girls. But many doubt whether the trial will answer the questions still haunting Belgium. Opinion polls suggest the overwhelming majority believe Dutroux lay at the heart of a paedophile ring that encompassed politicians, judges and policemen. In 1996, fury at police and government incompetence culminated in a series of marches in Belgium, which, at their height, drew about 320 000 people. Dutroux himself fuelled the conspiracy theories on the eve of his trial. ?People want to believe that I am at the centre of everything. They are mistaken,? he was quoted as saying by a Belgian television station.

Belgian police red-faced as Dutroux van drives off with door open
Belgian police, who have already let Marc Dutroux escape once, suffered fresh embarrassment when the van taking the alleged child killer from court drove off with a back door open. But police insisted there was no chance of Dutroux staging another bid for freedom during the incident, which occurred at the end of the first day of his trial as he was being transported back to his prison cell. Television pictures showed the green police van leaving the Palace of Justice in Arlon, south-east Belgium, with one of the doors to its trunk wide open as it began the 300 metre trip to the nearby jail.

In 1996, she named and described in great detail, to a specially assembled police team, the people and places involved in the paedophile ring. Senior judges, one of the country's most powerful politicians - now dead - and a very influential banker were included. One of the regular organisers of these parties, she said, was the man she knew as 'Mich', Jean Michel Nihoul. The sessions not only involved sex, they included sadism, torture and murder; and again, she described in detail, the place, the victims and how they were killed. She also claimed the young Marc Dutroux was there. "At these parties Nihoul was a sort of party beast while Dutroux was more on the side."

The French publishers of a book about paedophelia in Belgium have been ordered to insert a formal denial by the Belgian King, Albert II, of some of the allegations it contains. King Albert and the Belgian Government went to court in Paris because they said the book, The Paedophile Dossier, contained a series of unfounded libels. The book, by two French journalists, is a sensationalist account of the case of Marc Dutroux, the alleged sex offender and killer whose discovery five years ago caused such trauma in Belgium and the country's political establishment. Apart from general accusations of government cover-ups, the authors personally connect the name of King Albert with the scandal, saying that as crown prince he attended parties at which paedophiles were present.

In the interview with the Flemish-language station VTM Dutroux admitted locking up the girls but did not acknowledge responsibility for their deaths. He also said he had been part of a wider paedophile network but said the justice system did not want to pursue it. "There is a well-grounded [paedophile] ring," he said. "I maintained regular contact with people in this ring. However, the law does not want to investigate this lead."
But the BBC's Shirin Wheeler in Brussels says the interview is bound to fuel theories that the delay in bringing Dutroux to trial is because of a cover-up by members of the Belgian establishment allegedly linked to paedophile activities.

Dutroux had been released on parole after an earlier conviction for raping five girls, and despite a string of clues and tip-offs, police failed to make the connection between him and a series of abductions. Their most notorious failure came when officers searched his home, but failed to find two eight-year-old girls - Melissa Russo and Julie Lejeune - held prisoner in the basement. The pair later starved to death after Dutroux was arrested on a completely separate issue - car theft. Officials have also been accused of mistreating the parents of the victims, and of failing to pass vital information between prosecutors and police.

But once a pedophile always a pedophile. The vast majority of pedophiles will strike again after prison. There is no known cure.
If we know that, and they asked to be locked away for life we should do exactly that.
