ESSEX - The Coast Guard captain who risked his life to save four men from a downed helicopter in the ocean during the worst storm of the century will be a guest speaker at a series of talks on the sea.

Capt. Larry Brudnicki commanded the Coast Guard cutter Tamoroa and served as on-scene commander for the rescue mission during what became known as "The Perfect Storm," described in both the best-selling book and movie.

The four-part series, titled "Essex and the Sea," taking place at the Essex Library, will also feature a presentation by Bill Sisson, the editor of Soundings magazine, the well-known television weatherman, Dr. Mel Goldstein, and navigation expert Mike Saylor of Clinton-based West Marine.

The talks kick off Sunday, Feb. 2, and will be given on consecutive Sunday afternoons at 4 p.m.

"Sailors need something to help them through the winter doldrums," says Cathy Burgard, chief librarian of the library. "This series is geared for people who miss their boats." The co-sponsors, Essex Yacht Club, the Essex Corinthian Yacht Club, the Pettipaug Yacht Club and the Essex Boat Club - were ecstatic about the series. After all, Essex Harbor is one of the favorite cruising destinations of all New England.

The program is the brainchild of Jerry Wilson, a library board member and avid sailor. "Basically, this town is just crazy about sailing. We not only have four yacht clubs for a town of only 6,500 people," he said, "we also have the Frost Bite Club, which sails the Sound until November and starts again in March, and the Dry Pants Yacht Club, whose members sail model boats in Sunset Pond by remote control."

The first speaker, Sisson, will share some of what he considers to be the most exciting tall tales of the sea that have appeared in his magazine Soundings, the nation's award-winning boating magazine for pleasure boats. A question and answer period will follow.

Dr. Mel, the popular meteorologist from Channel 8 News, will speak Feb. 9 on "Reading the Clouds at Sea," what every sailor needs to know. He has been televising the weather for Connecticut since 1976. He recently finished his book, "The Complete Idiot's Guide to the Weather," and will be signing copies after the event.

Next, on Feb. 16, Mike Saylor (no pun intended) of West Marine and an expert on navigational instruments, especially the history of the sextant, will speak on what's new in navigational instruments.

Last but not least, Capt. Brudniki will relate his experience coordinating the rescue mission launched by boat and helicopter. Brudnicki received his master's degree in physical science from Weslyan University, where author Sebastian Junger, author of the "Perfect Storm," was a student. He also earned a master's degree in physics from the University of Connecticut at Storrs.

This final program is slated for Feb. 23.

The library is located at 33 West Ave. in Essex. Admission to the program is free of charge and refreshments will be served. The library expects a large turnout and would appreciate reservations, which may be made by calling 767-1560.
