Default Ordered an M1 Carbine through CMP...

The supply of surplus M1 Carbines and M1 Garands is drying up.

Friends I've talked to say the ones they received through the Civilian Marksmanshp Program were decent quality, and the price is no higher than anywhere else.

So I ordered a "service grade" M1 Carbine and if it turns out to be in decent condition, I'll get another M1 Garand.

I'll post pics when it gets here.

The CMP southern store is in Anniston Al. just about 140 mi from here and only a skip from one of my hunting leases. do you know if you can pick up a weapon direct from the store?
That way I could pick thru them.

Yes!

You can go to the store and cherry pick!

If you've bought through CMP before, then you already know what documents you need to bring.

Be advised, however, that the Anniston store will be closed from March 15th through March 31st for some reason or another.

Going to pick out a few next wednesday. Boy those kimber target rifles sure look good. Think I'll pick up a couple of IBM carbines.

Yeah, those Kimber Model 82 rifles look nice.

They are new, unused.

Sure wish I had a place to set up an indoor range.

Default FYI Ammo

Checked on .30 ammo and it is cheaper to buy thru the sportsmans guide. It also appears that no 30 rd mags are avail but 15 rd are. 30s are avail on the civ market.

Be careful of which magazines you buy.

You don't have to worry about G.I. magazines, but some of the newly made carbine mags are CRAP.

I don't know which of the new mags are okay.

I'll probably stick with G.I. mags even though they cost more.

There's a tutorial you can download from the CMP site about carbine mags.
Might have some useful info.

Thanks for putting me onto Sportman's Guide!
I didn't know about them.
I've been doing Sarco and Numrich Arms.

Yeah, there's always a possibility.

The civilian version of the M14 is the M1A made by Springfield Armory.

Springfield Armory is now a civilian enterprise.

It's just like the M14 but without the selective fire features.

Problem is, nowadays you aren't going to touch one for less than $1,500.
