Thumbs up My Great grandfather

fought in the Civil War as a grunt with the 4th New Jersey Infantry. A guy tracing his family history found me and had some letters my great grandfather had written home during the war and he sent me copies. Reading them there was and instant bond between us - a combat bond . He wrote things like " we are still alive " "but if I live" " Lying in the rain every man hugs his gun like a mother hugs her child , he don't care about himself just his gun" " The dead were unburied" It was like a hand reaching out to me from 143 years ago telling me it would be OK. Soldiers Heart ain't new .

Default What a

great gift LT.............

You are a very fortunate man to have this bit of family heritage and American history to enjoy and be proud of.

Here's a 'salute'...... ...........to you and your great-grandfather.

I'm proud to have met you and call you my brother.

LT -

I once had the privilege to read several letters written home during the War Between The States. Those guys back then may not have been as well educated as people today, but the "GENUINE" sentiment that they related is priceless!

You have to be really proud of your great grandfather - I'll bet he was quite a man!

My Great Grandfather and his younger brother joined and served together in Company B , 4th NJ Infantry. Known as the Potters Company , cause they were all potters. Really neat reading his letters to his other brother. Ain't changed much when you been in combat , he saw his best friend die , shot in the neck.

How cool is that!!? I would love to have something to read from my family then. All my "people" on my mom's side were southern and all of em on my father's side was northern. I don't think the southern half knew how to write.

Only thing I have from family is some poems written by my crazy g-grandmother.

I am so glad you found that connection in those letters.
