Some history on the 8th trans group
I was reading some history on our 585th T web site. The 8th had 3 battalions. I don't know for sure how many companies maybe 16 to 20. They mostley convoyed on QL19 to Anke and Pleiko then. From Sep 2,1967 to Sep 2 1968 they were ambushed 36 times and had 38 KIA and 204 wounded. My company left IIcorp and moved to Icorp some time in Feb 1968. I always thought QL19 was much worse than R-1 near Hue.

When I got back from Vietnam in Oct 67, I was assigned to the 338the Trans Co. Ft Meade MD. They were heading to Vietnam a month after my discharge. After much research, I couldnt find anything on them. Bob K

http://grambo.us/atav/default.html all transpertation units in Vietnam From PhuBI to just past Hue heading north was not safe but safer than just about anywhere on 19. The difference is the amount of US military in the area. All along 19 there was just a few Army Camps, There were Cav, 101,4th and a few Marines around the PhuBi Hue area, At east in 68. The only thing I can remember good about riding in a convoy was that it was quicker than walking, Im not real sure if quicker was good. We got taken out past the Oasis west of Pleiku in some 2 1/2 s , I really wouldn't want to be them (drivers) on there way back, They had nothing for help, except the right foot. Ron |

I don't see the 338th listed in my V. order of battle book eather. I wonder if a T company is assigned to a Division it wouldn't show up? The book lists all the companies. [Maybe they didn't go???

Did anyone see the French Military Cemetary on QL-19 [probably in one of the mountain pases,] ?? It was from the French Moble One- hundred unit that was wiped out there during their war. It showed them in the beginning of the movie 'We Were Soldiers. 'Even though I was there, I never noticed it, but all my buddies talk about it. [I think I heard its no longer there.]

Bob,
Was the 338th assigned to the 6th Armored Cavalry at Ft. Meade? If it was the 6th never really organized and got deployed to Vietnam. I was an officer at Aberdeen Proving Ground in August 1967 and there was a possibility of lots of us young LT's getting assigned to the 6th. I don't know if anyone did. I would have to look back through my orders.

Steve,
I was assigned to MACV, Advisory Team 70. We were detailed to advise the 5th ARVN Infantry Division. They operated in Binh Duong, Binh Long, and Phuoc Long Provinces, as well as a short tour in Cambodia in 1970. A great assignment. Loved being an advisor and getting to know the Vietnamese as a people.
