Default new here.....and a question

Hi Everyone,
This is my first post here been browsing around the site for about two days now. I'm a soon to be active duty member of the Air Force (i leave for lackland July 29th). I have a question that was probably asked much but ya well my youth will be my excuse...Why exactly did you join the military? I can personally say i joined because growing up in a military family (father was a marine in Vietnam both grandfathers fought in ww2 and some uncles in Korea) I was inscribed with a patriotic notion and i always wanted to serve this country. Thats all for now good bye
Greg

For a lot of the same reasons Greg - plus there was a war going on. I can't believe your Marine father let you join the Air Force ! Good luck to you , thank you for your service to your country.

Post Your friends and neighbors:

I got a letter:

Your friends and neighbors have chosen you to serve for them.

I was drafted. I spent two wonderful years in the Army!

Welcome Greg.

Ever since I could remember, I had a fascination with our Military. I watched war movies, went to air shows, and joined ROTC in high school. Unlike you, I didn't have a father or grandfather who fought in any war. There was never any outside influence to encourage me to enlist in the Military. I think I was born with the desire..

Good luck with your enlistment. The Air Force will be good to you. Make the best of your time in. Keep a journal to document your deployments and experiences.

Welcome Mech28!

Pull up a crate an set a spell.
Gotta confess I'm a little curious why you're useing a Mech. handle when you're 'bout to be a fly-guy.Spent some time with Mech. Inf.

Why did I enlist?Draft notice.
I salute your patriotism!Hope your career (long or short)is everything you hope for.Thank you for you service.

My family had someone in every war this country has fought up until Desert Storm.I had orders for that fracus but the paper-pushers told me I'd forgotten to re-enlist so I had to go be a civilian.Never have quite got the hang of it.

Why exactly did I join the service? First semester in college wasn?t looking good. Broke up with my girlfriend, or maybe the other way around. Like you I have a family heritage of military service. Vietnam seemed like the most interesting place to be (it was the only war we had). Dad didn?t want me to go and I was in my rebellion stage. I?d never been to bed with an Asian. I enjoy shooting firearms but don?t like paying for the bullets. Just wanted to prove to myself that I could do it. It was legal for 18 year olds to drink. And 182 other reasons.

Mech28 got my attention. There are at least five of us who, back in the day, where Mech, as in Mechanized Infantry. There?s no problem at all with your call sign but as you might imagine, you got my attention. Have a cousin who spent a summer at Luckland, good luck, take some deodorant.

Stay healthy,
Andy

The draft was on but the VN war hadn?t gone to the huge build up as yet and I had scarcely heard of the place. So I had always been a Navy wing nut, they had an excellent, exceptionally generous program so away I went. Plus I wanted to run away from home and the USN seemed a better choice than the French Foreign Legion at the time, LOL.
