ALAMEDA, Calif. — Oakland Military Institute cadets honored Coast Guard Rear Adm. Joseph "Pepe" Castillo, Commander, Eleventh Coast Guard District, during a regimental review at the OMI campus today.
Regimental reviews are part of military traditions and ceremonies which serve to develop poise, confidence, speaking skills, teamwork and leadership. Moreover, it provides a valuable means of recognizing military heritage and bolster pride in the service. The review was held to commemorate the upcoming Veteran’s Day with guests and visiting officials who represented all five military branches. This event is one of the many joint efforts of OMI and Coast Guard with tomorrow marking the first year milestone of a partnership allowing cadets to use the Coast Guard's Emlen Tunnel gym on Coast Guard Island in Alameda. Last year's memorandum of agreement also expands OMI cadets' educational and military career opportunities. OMI was founded in 2001 by then Oakland Mayor Jerry Brown, who is currently the California governor.
