Default U.S. & Coalition/Casualties in Afghanistan, as of November 3, 2004

There have been 178 coalition deaths -- 146 Americans, one Australian, four Britons, seven Canadians, three Danes, 14 Germans, one Norwegian and two Romanians -- in the war on terror as of November 3, 2004. Below are the names of the soldiers, Marines, airmen and sailors whose deaths have been reported by their country's governments. The troops died in support of the U.S.-led Operation Enduring Freedom or were part of the NATO-led International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) in Afghanistan.


Sgt. Maj. Phillip R. Albert 41 Headquarters Company, 2nd Battalion, 87th Infantry Regiment, 10th Mountain Division Terryville, Connecticut Killed in the accidental crash of a MH-53M Pave Low helicopter in Afghanistan on November 23, 2003

Sgt. Thomas F. Allison 22 Company E, 160th Special Operations Aviation Regiment Roy, Washington Allison was aboard an MH-47 Chinook helicopter that crashed at sea in the southern Philippines on February 21, 2002.

Cpl. William M. Amundson Jr. 21 3rd Battalion, 75th Ranger Regiment The Woodlands, Texas Killed during a ground assault force infiltration in eastern Afghanistan when the Ground Mobility Vehicle he was riding in rolled over on October 18, 2004

Lance Cpl. Brian J. N. Andersen 26 Royal Danish Engineering battalion Denmark One of five soldiers killed when two Russian SA-3 anti-aircraft missiles accidentally exploded while they were trying to defuse them in Kabul, Afghanistan, on March 6, 2002

Spc. Marc A. Anderson 30 Company A, 1st Battalion, 75th Ranger Regiment Brandon, Florida Anderson was shot and killed while exiting an MH-47 Chinook helicopter under fire on Takur Ghar Mountain in eastern Afghanistan during Operation Anaconda on March 4, 2002.

Master Sgt. Evander Earl Andrews 36 366th Civil Engineer Squadron Solon, Maine Andrews was killed in a heavy equipment accident near Al Udeid Air Base, Qatar, on October 10, 2001, the first death in Operation Enduring Freedom.

Capt. Tamara L. Archuleta 23 41st Rescue Squadron, 347th Rescue Wing Los Lunas, New Mexico Killed along with five other Air Force rescue team members when their HH-60 Pave Hawk helicopter crashed while on the way to help two injured Afghan children on March 23, 2003

Capt. Matthew W. Bancroft 29 Marine Aerial Refueler Transport Squadron 352, Marine Aircraft Group 11, 3rd Marine Aircraft Wing Burney, California Bancroft was aboard a KC-130/R Hercules refueling aircraft that crashed into a mountain in southwestern Pakistan on January 9, 2002.

Sgt. Michael C. Barry 29 205th Medical Battalion, Missouri Army National Guard Overland Park, Kansas Barry was fatally injured while riding in a vehicle that was struck by another vehicle in Doha, Qatar, on February 1, 2003.

Sgt. Bobby E. Beasley 36 3rd Battalion, 116th Infantry Regiment, 1st Brigade, 29th Infantry Division (Light Infantry), Virginia Army National Guard Inwood, West Virginia Killed when his vehicle struck an improvised explosive device in Ghazikel, Afghanistan, on August 7, 2004

Cpl. Robbie Christopher Beerenfenger 29 3rd Battalion, The Royal Canadian Regiment Ottawa, Canada Killed when the lead vehicle of his patrol struck an explosive device while on patrol near Camp Julien, the main Canadian camp in southwest Kabul, Afghanistan, on October 2, 2003

Lance Cpl. Bryan P. Bertrand 23 Marine Aerial Refueler Transport Squadron 352, Marine Aircraft Group 11, 3rd Marine Aircraft Wing Coos Bay, Oregon Killed when a KC-130/R Hercules refueling aircraft crashed into a mountain as it approached a military airfield in southwestern Pakistan on January 9, 2002.

Sgt. Jay A. Blessing 23 Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 2nd Battalion, 75th Ranger Regiment Tacoma, Washington Killed when the Humvee he was riding was hit by an improvised explosive device in Asadabad, Afghanistan, on November 16, 2003

Officer Helge Boes 32 Counterterrorism Center, Central Intelligence Agency Virginia Killed when a grenade detonated prematurely during a live-fire exercise in eastern Afghanistan on February 5, 2003

Chief Petty Officer Matthew J. Bourgeois 35 Naval Special Warfare Development Group Tallahassee, Florida Killed when he stepped on a land mine during a training mission near Kandahar, Afghanistan, on March 28, 2002

Gunnery Sgt. Stephen L. Tech. Sgt. John A. Chapman 36 24th Special Tactics Squadron Waco, Texas An Air Force combat controller, Chapman was shot and killed when he and a group of Navy SEALs were attempting to rescue another Navy SEAL during Operation Anaconda in southern Afghanistan on March 4, 2002

Sgt. 1st Class Nathan Ross Chapman 31 Company C, 3rd Battalion, 1st Special Forces Group (Airborne) San Antonio, Texas Shot and killed during an ambush in the vicinity of Khost, Afghanistan, near the Pakistan border on January 4, 2002

Sgt. Steven Checo 22 Company D, 2nd Battalion, 504th Parachute Infantry Regiment, 82nd Airborne Division New York, New York Shot and killed in a gunfight while on a nighttime operation in the eastern Afghan province of Paktika, near the border of Pakistan, on December 20, 2002

Staff Sgt. Craig W. Cherry 39 3rd Battalion, 116th Infantry Regiment, 1st Brigade, 29th Infantry Division (Light Infantry), Virginia Army National Guard Winchester, Virginia Killed when his vehicle struck an improvised explosive device in Ghazikel, Afghanistan, on August 7, 2004

Sgt. Bradley S. Crose 27 Company A, 1st Battalion, 75th Ranger Regiment Orange Park, Florida Shot and killed when he and fellow Rangers were exiting a Chinook helicopter while under fire after landing on Takur Ghar mountain in eastern Afghanistan during Operation Anaconda on March 4, 2002

Senior Airman Jason D. Cunningham 38th Rescue Squadron Camarillo, California An Air Force pararescueman, Cunningham was shot and wounded on Takur Ghar during Operation Anaconda on March 4, 2002. He died while waiting to be evacuated.

Machinist's Mate Fireman Apprentice Bryant L. Davis 20 The aircraft carrier USS Kitty Hawk Chicago, Illinois Davis fell overboard on November 7, 2001, and was declared deceased after more than two days of search and rescue efforts were unsuccessful.

Master Sgt. Jefferson Donald Davis 39 Company D, 2nd Battalion, 5th Special Forces Group (Airborne) Watauga, Tennessee One of three soldiers killed when a 2,000-pound satellite-guided bomb was targeted incorrectly and hit near his position north of Kandahar, Afghanistan, on December 5, 2001

Spc. Jonn J. Edmunds 20 Company B, 3rd Battalion, 75th Ranger Regiment Cheyenne, Wyoming Killed when the UH-60 Black Hawk helicopter he was in crashed in Pakistan on October 19, 2001

Capt. Daniel W. Eggers 28 C Company, 1st Battalion, 3rd Special Forces Group (Airborne) Cape Coral, Florida Killed along with three others when their vehicle struck an improvised explosive device as they swerved to avoid another explosive device in the road while returning to their base of operations near Kandahar, Afghanistan, on May 29, 2004

Chief Warrant Officer Jody L. Egnor 32 Company E, 160th Special Operations Aviation Regiment Middletown, Ohio Killed when a MH-47 Chinook helicopter crashed at sea in the southern Philippines on February 21, 2002

Sgt. Michael J. Esposito Jr. 22 Company A, 2nd Battalion, 22nd Infantry Regiment, 10th Mountain Division Brentwood, New York Killed when his team came under small-arms fire while clearing a village in Dehrawood, Afghanistan, on March 18, 2004

Maj. Curtis D. Feistner 34 Company E, 160th Special Operations Aviation Regiment White Bear Lake, Minnesota Killed when a MH-47 Chinook helicopter crashed at sea in the southern Philippines on February 21, 2002

Sgt. Kelvin E. Feliciano-Gutierrez 21 Headquarters Company, 3rd Battalion, 504th Parachute Infantry Regiment, 82nd Airborne Division Anasco, Puerto Rico Gutierrez was a .50 caliber gunner on a vehicle that was returning from patrol when it veered off the road and turned over. Gutierrez suffered fatal injuries while trapped under the vehicle and died at Bagram Air Base north of Kabul, Afghanistan, on June 28, 2003

Spc. Kyle Ka Eo Fernandez 26 2nd Battalion, 5th Infantry, 25th Infantry Division (Light) Waipahu, Hawaii Killed when an improvised explosive device detonated near their dismounted patrol in Miam Do, Afghanistan, on October 14, 2004

Sgt. Maj. Iosif Silviu Fogorasi 33 280th Infantry Battalion, 282nd Mechanized Brigade, Romanian Army Romania Killed when his armored convoy came under fire from unidentified attackers in southern Afghanistan near the Pakistan border on November 11, 2003

Staff Sgt. Ryan D. Foraker 31 342nd Military Police Company, U.S. Army Reserve Logan, Ohio Foraker went missing near Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, and his clothes and personal effects were found near the water's edge. He was declared dead on November 1, 2002.

Sgt. Jeremy D. Foshee 25 Company E, 160th Special Operations Aviation Regiment (Airborne) Pisgah, Alabama Killed when a MH-47 Chinook helicopter crashed at sea in the southern Philippines on February 21, 2002

Cpl. Billy Gomez 25 2nd Battalion, 27th Infantry Regiment, 25th Infantry Division (Light) Perris, California Gomez died on October 27, 2004, at Landstuhl Regional Medical Center in Landstuhl, Germany, of wounds he received when his vehicle struck an improvised explosive device on October 20 in Naka, Afghanistan.

Spc. Julie R. Hickey 20 412th Civil Affairs Battalion, Army Reserve Galloway, Ohio Hickey was evacuated from Bagram, Afghanistan, on June 30, 2004, and died in Landstuhl, Germany, on July 4 of complications from a non-combat related illness.

Staff Sgt. Jason Hicks 25 41st Rescue Squadron, 347th Rescue Wing Jefferson, South Carolina Killed along with five other Air Force rescue team members when their HH-60 Pave Hawk helicopter crashed while on the way to help two injured Afghan children on March 23, 2003

Sgt. 1st Class Mark Wayne Jackson 40 Company A, 2nd Battalion, 1st Special Forces Group (Airborne) Glennie, Michigan Killed in an explosion at an open-air market outside the gate of Camp Enrile Malagutay, in Zamboanga, Philippines, on October 2, 2002

Electrician's Mate-Firemen Apprentice Michael J. Jakes 20 Aircraft carrier USS Kitty Hawk Brooklyn, New York Died of fatal head injuries he sustained when he fell off a bunk on the USS Kitty Hawk in the Arabian Sea on December 4, 2001

Command Sgt. Maj. Dennis Jallah Jr. 49 Headquarters Company, 2nd Battalion, 10th Aviation Regiment, 10th Mountain Division Fayetteville, North Carolina Jallah died due to a non-combat cause on March 28, 2004, at Walter Reed Army Medical Center in Washington, D.C. He was medically evacuated from Afghanistan to via Landstuhl Medical Center in Germany on February 16.

Jeffries 21 320th Psychological Operations Company, Army Reserve Beaverton, Oregon Killed along with three others when their vehicle struck an improvised explosive device as they swerved to avoid another explosive device in the road while returning to their base of operations near Kandahar, Afghanistan, on May 29, 2004

Electronics Technician 3rd Class Benjamin Johnson 21 The Spruance-class destroyer USS Peterson Rochester, New York Johnson was part of an eight-man security team that boarded an Iraqi freighter suspected of smuggling oil. He and another sailor drowned when the freighter sank on November 18, 2001, in the northern Persian Gulf.

Navy Petty Officer 2nd Class Darrell Jones 22 Guided missile destroyer USS Higgins Wellston, Ohio Died of non-combat related injuries in Jebel Ali, United Arab Emirates on October 8, 2003

Spc. James C. Kearney III 22 1st Battalion, 168th Infantry Regiment, Iowa Army National Guard Emerson, Iowa Died in Salerno, Afghanistan, from injuries sustained when his convoy was attacked by enemy forces using rocket-propelled grenades in Sharan, Afghanistan, on November 1, 2004

Master Sgt. William J. Kerwood 37 20th Special Operations Squadron, 16th Special Operations Wing Houston, Missouri Killed in the accidental crash of a MH-53M Pave Low helicopter in Afghanistan on November 23, 2003

Lt. Col. Paul W. Kimbrough 44 416th Engineer Command, Team 28, U.S. Army Reserve Washington, D.C. Kimbrough died on October 3, 2003, in Incirlik, Turkey, of a non-combat related cause. He was medically evacuated from Bagram, Afghanistan, and was taken to the 39th Medical Squadron in Turkey, where he remained hospitalized until his death.

Sgt. 1st Class Robert K. McGee 37 Operational Detachment A 155, Company B, 2nd Battalion, 1st Special Forces Group (Airborne) Antioch, Tennessee McGee was found dead in his hotel room in Manila, Philippines, on July 1, 2004. He was deployed to the Philippines as part of an advance team for Joint Special Operations Task Force-Philippines to assist in light-infantry tactics training. The cause of death remains under investigation.

Seth Michaud 27 Marine Heavy Helicopter Squadron 461, Marine Aircraft Group 26, 2nd Marine Aircraft Wing Hudson, Massachusetts Michaud was killed when an Air Force B-52 bomber inadvertently dropped ordnance south of the target onto the Godoria Range observation post 60 miles north of Camp Lemonier, Djibouti, on June 22, 2003. Michaud and other Marines were at the range in case a medical evacuation was needed.

Aviation Boatswain's Mate Petty Officer 1st Class Neil C. Roberts 32 Naval Special Warfare Development Group Woodland, California Roberts was aboard a MH-47 Chinook helicopter preparing to land on Takur Ghar mountain in eastern Afghanistan when the helicopter was hit by rocket-propelled grenades, causing Roberts to fall from the helicopter's ramp. Roberts survived the fall and immediately engaed al Qaeda fighters with his M-249 light machine guns, surviving at least 30 minutes before he was shot and killed at close range.

Samek 21 66th Rescue Squadron, 57th Operations Group Rogers, Arkansas Samek died from injuries he received when an Air Force HH-60 Pave Hawk combat search and rescue helicopter crashed during a medical evacuation mission 105 miles (170 kilometers) east of Shindand, Afghanistan, on October 21, 2004. The accident was not due to hostile action.

Sgt. 1st Class Christopher James Speer 28 Headquarters, U.S. Army Special Operations Command Albuquerque, New Mexico Speer, a Special Forces medic, was wounded during a four-hour firefight in the Afghan village of Ab Khail, near the Pakistan border, on July 27, 2002. He was evacuated to Germany, where he died of his wounds on August 7, 2002.

Petty Officer 1st Class David M. Tapper 32 Naval Special Warfare Development Group Atco, New Jersey Tapper, a Navy Seal, was wounded when his convoy made contact with enemy forces in the vicinity of Orgun, in Paktika Province, Afghanistan on August 20, 2003. He was transported to Bagram Air Base hospital in Afghanistan where he died of his wounds.

Cpl. Patrick D. Tillman 27 Company A, 2nd Battalion, 75th Ranger Regiment Chandler, Arizona Tillman was part of a combat patrol that was ambushed at 7:30 p.m. local time by 10 to 20 attackers armed with mortars and small arms near Khowst, Afghanistan, on April 22, 2004. In the ensuing firefight, Tillman was accidentally killed by fire from his own unit.
