UN assesses if Antarctica temperature reading is record high
By: The Associated Press & ABC News - 02-07-20

The U.N. weather agency says an Argentine research base on the northern tip of Antarctica is reporting a temperature that, if confirmed, could amount to a record high for the icy continent

GENEVA -- The U.N. weather agency said Friday that an Argentine research base on the northern tip of Antarctica is reporting a temperature that, if confirmed, could be a record high for the icy continent.

World Meteorological Organization spokeswoman Clare Nullis, citing figures from Argentina's national weather service, said the Esperanza base recorded 18.3 degrees C celsius ( 64.9 Fahrenheit) on Thursday — topping the former record of 17.5 degrees tallied in March 2015.

The WMO's committee that draws on the agency's weather and climate archives is now expected to verify whether the reading would amount to a new record.

“Everything we have seen thus far indicates a likely legitimate record but we will of course begin a formal evaluation of the record once we have full data from SMN and on the meteorological conditions surrounding the event," said WMO’s Weather and Climate Extremes rapporteur, Randal Cerveny, referring to the acronym for Argentina's weather service.

"The record appears to be likely associated (in the short term) with what we call a regional ‘foehn’ event over the area," Cerveny said, defining it as a rapid warming of air coming down a slope or mountain.

WMO says the Antarctic Peninsula, on the continent's northwest tip near South America, is among the fastest warming regions on Earth — at almost 3 degrees Celsius over the last half-century.

Some 87 percent of glaciers along the west coast of the peninsula have retreated over that 50-year span, with most showing “an accelerated retreat” over the last 12 years, WMO said.

Personal note: No two ways about it - Climate Change is here and accelerating. We the People of this Planet Earth are responsible for its demise. It's a runaway event of which we most likely can't fix. If we don't act on it soon our future looks pretty grim. Many have said this is a pipe dream story - but in reality the facts are in and it isn't looking good.

What's the fix (if there is one) will depend on how the entire world reacts to these notifications. The worst is yet to come. I won't detail the facts as we've been told about them for years with complete disregard. So now the inevitable is upon us all - and its not looking good.

We've been forewarned for decades with little regards to the issues. We blew them off like a candle on a cake. And now we've got nobody to blame but ourselves. It's not a popular subject with the people's of this earth for some reason - and hasn't been in the last 50 years. It's a little late to say why didn't you tell us sooner.

Well - we all know what our reply. Who give's a shit - is the attitude of multitude. The end results are too terrible to be comprehended except by our scientist.

We living today will most likely be long gone when the world itself cooks away our waters and atmosphere but our prodigy will be there and they will reap the end results we started.

But then again the way we war upon one another - we may hasten our demise so as not to suffer through these atmospheric issues - but our great-great grand kids may live during its demise - something to look forward to.

O Almighty Lord God, who neither slumberest nor sleepest; Protect and assist, we beseech thee, all those who at home or abroad, by land, by sea, or in the air, are serving this country, that they, being armed with thy defence, may be preserved evermore in all perils; and being filled with wisdom and girded with strength, may do their duty to thy honour and glory; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
