Amphibious assault ship ablaze in port San Diego

Ships company and local fire department crews are battling an ongoing blaze aboard the amphibious assault ship USS Bonhomme Richard LHD-6 in port in San Diego, the Navy confirmed Sunday.

An explosion and then the fire broke out around 9:45 a.m. in the ship’s well deck, according to a internal report obtained by Navy Times, though local reports say the call to local fire came in at just before 9 a.m. Crews are treating burn and smoke inhalation injuries, the report said.

Krishna Jackson, a spokeswoman for San Diego Naval Base, estimated about 200 sailors and officers were on board Sunday morning. San Diego is the Bonhomme Richard’s home port and it was undergoing routine maintenance at the time of the fire.

It is unclear if the injuries are among firefighters or ship’s company.

Pictures of the ship circulating online show smoke billowing out of the superstructure. It is unclear if any sailors or firefighters have been injured.

According to the local emergency scanner, officials were clearing the pier after “a large explosion” on the ship.

To me it seems to be a fire in one of the hangar bay areas!? It seems to be coming from the well deck.
