Heavy snow has caused transport disruption across the country, with commuters warned that further flurries will close roads and delay trains this afternoon.
Hundreds of schools were closed from Cornwall to Lincolnshire, as the Met Office issued severe weather and icy road warnings for most of Britain.
Drivers have been advised to take extra care after the bad weather was linked to a series of accidents, with one man killed and two injured in a collision off the M18 in South Yorkshire.
London also saw its first snow of the season as the blizzards moved south, causing delays on a number of train lines into the capital.
Forecasters predicted that up to three inches (8cm) could fall on higher ground in London and the South East during the day as the heavy snow spreads.
Blizzards that have blighted Scotland and the North East in recent days brought up to two inches to the Midlands overnight and could reach the capital, as well as parts of Wales and the South East.
The first signs of travel chaos hit London last night as a SouthEastern train carrying almost 100 commuters to Ashford in Kent was stranded with no power for more than two hours after tracks froze.
The 11:07pm service from London Victoria fell victim to sub-zero temperatures between Borough Green and West Malling before being towed to safety by another train.
Arctic conditions in the north of the country intensified overnight, with up to four inches (10cm) of snow falling during the early hours of Tuesday morning.
North Yorkshire, Lincolnshire and Merseyside all experienced heavy and persistent flurries, after parts of Scotland and the North East saw more than 16in (40cm) of snowfall on Monday.
Birmingham and parts of Gloucestershire and Sussex also experienced fresh falls on Tuesday morning as the band of wintry snow swept across the country.
One man died and two other men were injured in a three-vehicle collision on an exit slip road off the M18 motorway in South Yorkshire.
South Yorkshire Police said the crash happened when a recovery vehicle rolled into two other vehicles.
A spokesman said the red Foden recovery truck broke down on the exit slip road at junction 3 (Doncaster) of the M18 northbound carriageway at 1.40am today.
A number of roads in Derbyshire were impassable this morning and more than 60 schools were closed across the county.
The A57 at Snake Pass, A6024 at Holme Moss, A537 Cat and Fiddle and A628 at Woodhead were all closed due to snow.
A Derbyshire Police spokesman said most major routes were fine but the north of the region, where snow had fallen more heavily than in other parts, was particularly badly affected and drivers must take care if using minor routes in the area.
On Northern Rail, there were no trains between Middlesbrough and Whitby, and no replacement transport was available.
Northern Rail services were also affected by a signalling problem in the Dore area of South Yorkshire which also hit services run by the CrossCountry, East Midlands Trains and First TransPennine companies.
The problem led to delays of up to 40 minutes to trains between Sheffield and Manchester Piccadilly/Chesterfield.
On the Tube, a signal failure led to suspension of services on the Piccadilly line between Uxbridge and Rayners Lane in west London.
Southampton Airport was open but operator BAA said some flights were being affected by the adverse conditions.
At Luton Airport in Bedfordshire there were delays and cancellations.
Forecasters said the freezing spell would last until the end of the week, with colder-than-normal temperatures expected throughout December.
Sarah Holland, a forecaster at the Met Office, said: “Many places are going to struggle to get much above zero even in the daytime in the next couple of days.
“We have got north-easterly winds at the moment, which have persisted over the last week, that’s going to continue but the wind speeds are going to pick up and the windchill factor is going to come in.
“In more exposed areas you could see drifting snow as well – there is no let up at the moment.”
Severe weather warnings of heavy snowfall and widespread road ice have been issued across almost every part of the UK, with further travel chaos expected to heap misery on commuters.
Twitter users welcomed the first dusting to fall on the capital this year, with snow reported from Twickenham to Croydon.
Tweeters across Britain have been rating the snowfall in their area out of ten and Londoners were able to join in, with the covering in Islington given 7 out of 10 by one resident.
Another user estimated up to an inch was on the ground in the Purley/Croydon area.
Most reports from London were of a light covering of snow, with Mayfair, West Hampstead and Sydenham all being given 2 out of 10.
One user wrote: “Slight dusting of snow in London. Definitely not the 'Make sure you have sufficient supplies' type of snow people made it out to be.”
