Dawn at Isurava
This is a pic that only lobbed into my inbox today and missed the 11th of November series. Isurava is in Papua New Guinea on the Kokoda track and marks the spot where men from the Australian Army 2/14th and 39th Battalions dug in to defend Port Moresby (and hence Australia) from the advancing Japanese - in late August '42. http://www.users.bigpond.com/battlef...JapAttack.html The memorial is comprised of 4 sentinel stones overlooking the valley. Each is inscribed with one of the virtues demonstrated by the Australian soldiers during the battle, "Courage", "Endurance", "Sacrifice" & "Mateship". Each stone of imperial black granite, weighing in at 3½ tonnes, the maximum weight that the local helicopters could carry - was mined from a spot close to my home. http://www.dva.gov.au/commem/oawg/png.htm -- Regards Dave Kearton |
