Tribute focuses on Vietnam veterans

HANFORD - Commemorating the 30th anniversary of the end of combat in
the Vietnam War, and marking the Nov. 11, 1918 signing of the
Armistice to end the First World War, citizens, soldiers and veterans
gathered at Hanford Cemetery Tuesday to pay tribute to military
veterans.

Though the ceremony hosted by the Hanford post of the American Legion
is held annually, this year's was the first that paid special tribute
to military men and women who fought and died in the Vietnam War.

"For the most part, our... service and sacrifice was ignored," said
Gary Sanger, second vice commander for the Hanford American Legion
Post.

The alienation of Vietnam veterans, Sanger said, was partially due to
the war being the first conflict ever captured on national television.
"... the fighting in Vietnam became a staple of evening newscasts, as
were the anti-war protests at home," Sanger said.
