1st Cav Medevac
The Medevac platoon was part of my battalion, 15th Med and usually we had one or two of them at our helipad. I have mentioned befor the terrible casualties they themselves had: 30% killed, most of them got at least one Purple Heart. I get the 1st Cav newspaper, the Saber and there are columns from individual units. There was a letter from a guy requesting information on nose art for a book he was writing on Vietnam helicopters. In passing he said he knew the medevac platoon had gone through 83 helicopters duing their stay in Vietnam. This is from all causes, noncombat, whatever but for a platoon to go through 83 choppers gives some idea of the attrition these guys suffered. They were allotted eight at a time, I think and were in action for 68 months in Vietnam.

I can
never say enough or do enough to praise the Men and Women of 15th Med. They came....they saw, they saved our asses no matter how hot their makeshift LZ was.
One of the greatest praises came from a former MCAS Beaufort base SgtMaj...a Marine grunt in Vietnam. SgtMaj "Big Knife" Johnson told me one day that Marine medivacs wouldn't come in because the LZ was too hot. They called the Cav. 4 Medivacs were shot down trying to get to the Marines. The 5th still came in and got the Devil Dogs out. He said they no longer put Marine Medivacs on their freq....switched to the Cav. A big Hooorah to the men of 15th Med. Doc Fred, you will always be my hero. Pack

Sorry I missed some posts
Have been dealing with a colapsed sewer line at my house.
Fred, You know where my hero is, right at the base of your shadow. I don't know what ship brought me to you, it probably was one of ours because I don't think we called dustoff for a pickup where we were. But you guys of the 15th were always there. I have said many times that anyone can pull a trigger and kill someone but to do what you did takes a real man with real guts. Look forward to seeing you in November. |
