Russia says it won’t stop tailing US aircraft following 'unsafe' maneuver

Russia’s defense ministry said Thursday that it would continue to tail U.S. aircraft flying near its territory over the Black Sea and suggested the Navy give its pilots updated maps showing the Crimean Peninsula within Russian borders.

U.S. Naval Forces Europe reported on Monday that a Russian fighter flew within 5 feet of an EP-3 reconnaissance plane, which was deemed an unsafe maneuver. The incident occurred over international airspace, the Navy said.

Russia on Thursday said the U.S. plane was flying near the Crimean Peninsula, which Moscow annexed from Ukraine in 2014, sparking Cold War-like tensions with the West.

“The Russian military believes that when it dispatches air pilots on reconnaissance missions in this part of the Black Sea the United States should keep in mind that they will encounter Russian fighters, and not Ukrainian partners,” said the Russian Defense Ministry, as quoted by state media. “Or supply all crews with updated maps showing the correct borders of Russia’s airspace.”

In November, a Russian fighter intercepted a Navy P-8 aircraft in a similar incident over the Black Sea, where close air encounters between Russia and the U.S. have become commonplace.

In a message to the Navy’s 6th Fleet, the Russian Defense Ministry issued a “reminder” that “Crimea is an integral part of Russia.”

The U.S. military and State Department, however, blamed Russia for engaging in maneuvers that increase the risk of miscalculation and midair collisions.

“The United States notes with the highest level of concern the latest incident of unsafe Russian military practices,” State Department spokeswoman Heather Nauert said Tuesday. “While the U.S. aircraft was operating under international law, the Russian side was flagrantly violating existing agreements and international law.”

A Russian fighter jet got so aggressive while intercepting a US Navy spy plane that the crew felt 'violent turbulence'

- A Russian Su-27 intercepted a US Navy EP-3 over the Black Sea on Monday.

- The jet performed aggressive maneuvers and flew as close as 5 feet at times.

- The Navy has said in a statement that some of the jets’ most aggressive actions were not caught on film.

A Russian Su-27 fighter jet intercepted a US Navy EP-3 Aries signals reconnaissance aircraft over the Black Sea on Monday, and it looks like the incident was particularly aggressive.

The air superiority fighter flew as close as five feet from the US aircraft. Footage released by the Navy shows that the jet was loaded for bear, and was flying “in close proximity and in varying positions.”

But the Navy confirmed that some of the more aggressive maneuvers were not caught on camera.

“While not shown in the released imagery, during the intercept, the Russian Su-27 executed a hard right-to-left turn from the US EP-3’s right side with an excessive closure rate and came within five feet of the EP-3’s right wingtip,” the Navy said.

“The Russian Su-27 then proceeded to enter the flight path of the US Navy EP-3, crossing within 10 feet and executing a sharp dive below, which resulted in violent turbulence for the US EP-3 and its crewmembers.”

This is not the first tim a Russian jet has conducted aggressive maneuvers. Last November, a Russian Su-30 fighter flew as close as 50 feet before turning on its afterburners while intercepting a US Navy P-8A Poseidon anti-submarine warfare aircraft over the same area.

The manoeuvre forced the plane to enter its jet wash and caused it to undergo a 15-degree roll, Lt. Col. Michelle Baldanza, a Pentagon spokeswoman, said at the time.

The US Navy has been conducting reconnaissance missions over the Black Sea at a high rate since the annexation of Crimea by Russia in 2014.

Russia: If U.S. Navy pilots can't handle buzzing, stay out of the Black Sea
By: Doug Stanglin - USA Today 2-1-18
RE: https://www.usatoday.com/story/news/...ea/1085861001/

Only days after the U.S. accused a Russian plane of dangerously buzzing a U.S. military plane in the Black Sea, the Russian defense ministry said Thursday that if U.S. pilots are depressed over Russian planes protecting its borders, they should fly other routes.

The incident Monday, as reported by U.S. Naval Forces Europe-Africa, involved a Russian Su-27 flying within five feet of an EP-3 Aries before crossing through the U.S. aircraft’s flight path and forcing it to fly through the Su-27’s flight wash, according to Military Times.

It was the second such incident in three months. In late November, a P-8A Poseidon was left in another Russian jet’s afterburners, causing the Poseidon to roll 15 degrees and experience "violent turbulence," Military Times reported.

The latest incident, which lasted about two hours and 40 minutes, occurred as the Aries was flying in international airspace, the Navy said.

The Aries, used for intelligence and reconnaissance, did not provoke the response, according to the Navy statement.

"The Russian military is within its right to operate within international airspace, but they must behave with international standards set to ensure safety and prevent incidents," the Navy statement said. "Unsafe actions increase the risk of miscalculation and midair collisions."

The Russian defense ministry shrugged off the complaint and chided the U.S. over its concern.

"The Aerospace Force will continue to maintain reliable protection of Russia’s airspace," the defense ministry said, according to the Tass news agency. "If the awareness of this is a reason for U.S. air pilots to feel depression or succumb to phobias, we advise the U.S. side to exclude the routes of such flights near Russian borders in the future or return to the negotiating table and agree on their rules," the defense ministry said

The U.S. State Department also weighed in after Monday's incident, accusing the Russians of "flagrantly violating existing agreements and international law."

"This is but the latest example of Russian military activities disregarding international norms and agreements," State Department spokeswoman Heather Nauert said in the statement. "We call on Russia to cease these unsafe actions that increase the risk of miscalculation, danger to aircrew on both sides, and midair collisions."
