GI hand gun

I was working at the American Patriot Mobile Museum the other day when I noticed a new display of an issued pistol.
Issued to some Union Army Officers was a muzzle loaded pistol with a bayonet actually forged onto the end of its barrel.
I guess if you had to stop long enough to load it a treasonous rebel might get close enough to you that you needed to stab him and finish loading up for the next guy.
