Saved by the sticker - again

We lived so far out in the sticks that the only kids who destroyed mail boxes were "city kids". Our mail boxes were sacred to us, nobody local ever tried to destroy a mail box.

So. .. . .

Kids that destroyed mail boxes were known as targets. You could shoot a mail box destroyer and get a medal. You'd be a hero!

Can't believe no one asked, how many mail box's did you get? I think my record was 12 but I was only 16 at the time.
Why couldn't we have gotten stopped when we were going out? I would have loved to say, "Your not going to look behind the seat are you?"

As far as shooting Yankee's, unless they are from New York City, a notice: There are some of us who look forward to shooting back.

I used to deliver mail on rural routes for a little over a year and saw quite a few mailboxes damaged by kids playing "mailbox" baseball. A favorite target was one that sat all by its lonesome on a long stretch of road. After having to replace his box a few times in one month, the owner hit on an idea. He replaced the box and built a cage around it made of 1" diameter steel pipes. One night he heard the now familiar clang of the aluminum bat but with a different tone. He went down to the box with his camera and snapped a photo of a local high school kid retrieving the bat. In the background you can see another kid shaking the effects of the "sting" out of his arm. That box is still there and still intact.

On a more tragic note, several years ago two high school girls broke into dad's liquor and decided to go out and wreck a few mailboxes. The one in the passenger's seat had leaned far out the window to get a good shot at the box but the driver got too close. The passenger hit her head on the box and fell back into the car. The driver was so drunk she didn't notice her friend was injured and thought she had just passed out. She drove around for some time before she finally noticed the blood. She drove to the hospital, but it was too late.
