Smile Tin Can's with 8" deck guns

I found an answer to a question posed earlier. I went to the guys who would know the Tin Can specialist. I asked the question and here is what they reported.

Boats,

Yes there was one. It was USS Hull (DD-945) equipped with a prototype lightweight 8"/55-cal. that was not adopted by the Navy.

There are several photos available on the Naval Historical Center website at http://www.history.navy.mil/photos/s...sh-h/dd945.htm which you can legally download including this one:

I hope this helps.

Default Boats

Thought Destoryers could only handle 5 inch guns, never new they could handle 8 inch guns, thought Crusiers could only handle 8 inch guns.

Mr. Ryan you can see that the Navy did not adopt the concept. I would suspect the super structure was a little heavy and it was no doubt more costly to convert. Never the less your posed question is answered - I hope?
