Default First piece of ass in VN in Recondo school

I got my first P o' A (in the NAm) the day I hit Recondo school. we were hanging out in the barracks waiting for aomething to happenwhen the ol light bulb went off over my head: HEY! I reealized that, after 6 months stratight on the line, certain parts of me were thinking my throat had been slit and it never got the news. There's just only so much you can do by hand.
So I just picked up, stuck my .45 in my pocket (souvenir of 101st) and ambled out the gate. There was some Vietnamese MP's guarding (chuckle) the gate, I walked right by them ("Do I look like a ----ing VC,, A$$holes?")
I kept walking untill I hit the first bar I could find, went in an bought a bottle of CC for starters, then picked out the least ugly one in the crowd.
It probably cost me more than it should and it was lousy in a lousy place but I stilll look back at that fondly. It was great! Whatever I paid, it was worth it.
When I went back in '03 I took great pains to avoid anyone around the age of 36 who looked like me.
Stay good
James

Not real sure what you are talking about.......There is a difference between LRP and LRRP units.

LRP was specifically formed for Long Range Patrol ops - as the case of the 20th INF LRP- was reactivated specifcally for such.
LRP units fielded 4 - 6 man teams, sometimes 8 man teams - No "Heavy Recon Teams", 10 - 12 man Teams w/60's and mortars.

LRRP was normally at Bgd or Div level and was a part of such - doing most of the recon work. LRRPs' commonly fielded Heavy Teams and were used as blocking forces and sometimes as search and destroy forces.

IN a way they are the same - as far as Recon - but they were different.

Thumbs up Cal,

glad to see you made it over here. You'll find it to be a great site with a great bunch of people. Mostly Legs here, but you get used to 'em. Actually start to like some of 'em .

Like has been said, I met LRP1 over on Paratrooper.net. Got to talking about the 101st, the Oh Deuce, LRRPs, etc., and mentioned I had a friend that was a LRRP about the time LRP1 was with the 20th Inf [Abn]. When I told him James' name, Cal knew almost immediately who I was talking about. Through e-mails, PM's, and phone calls to James, I was able to help them get in touch with each other. Was glad to help, boys.

Looking forward to reading some of your stories. This is a good place to come swap experiences and compare notes with alot of people who have been-there-done-that. Just about the whole spectrum of the war is represented here. At JUN66, I might be the earliest in-country on here. Correct me if I'm wrong, guys. Have people from 71/72, and all the years in between. Interesting to see how things changed through the years.

Take some time to read back through the threads, and have a good time here.

Talking Welcome!

Just remember one thing.
Everyone on this site is basically dysfunctional!
I'm the only normal one on this site, and I'm not so sure about me. In fact the more I think about it, if I were normal I wouldn't be posting on this site.
Its just dawned on me . . . . . I'm not normal . . . . I need a therapist . . . . help!

Anyway inspite of all my new revelations, I am the self-appoint, unofficial therapist for this site so if you are a little or a lot crazy, welcome to this site.

Keith

Keith...Call Brice right away. With all the counseling he has been providing Bob, not sure if he can get you in or not. I heard he is having a Fall Special, might want to check in on it!

friscokid,

Tom

Thanks for the welcome Brother...Yes, you beat me to Nam by 5.5 months....although I think we left the 101 about the same time...I went to MACV and the 20th. You were right - this is a good AO. Have been reading a lot of earlier post and a lot of good conversation. Will post some pics in the Gallery when I get some together.
