Vessel grounds, Coast Guard evacuates two people 80 miles north of Sitka
KODIAK, Alaska – A Coast Guard MH-60 Jayhawk helicopter crew from Air Station Sitka medevaced two men from a beach in Lisianski Inlet 80 miles north of Sitka at 1:35 a.m., Sunday.
Jamal Moss and Rick Strahm reportedly suffered multiple injuries after their 19-foot skiff ran aground while a third man on board was reportedly uninjured. A nearby good Samaritan vessel, Shoreline Scow with a qualified emergency medical technician aboard, responded to the grounding and called the Coast Guard for their assistance. Coast Guard Sector Juneau command center received the call for assistance at 11:39 p.m., Saturday and launched the helicopter crew at 12:32 a.m. The EMT aboard the commercial vessel Shoreline Scow attended to Moss and Strahm until the rescue crew arrived. The helicopter crew safely transported Moss and Strahm to Southeast Regional Health Consortium in Sitka for further medical assistance. The weather at the time of the rescue was 48 degrees with an easterly wind of 12 mph, gusting to 17 mph. There has been no pollution reported from the grounded skiff. More... |
