Default Sailors poem

I found this while going thru my parents things. It's dated
Aug 2, '45. I don't know who sent it to who. My father was
serving in the navy in the phillipines at the time.

Loving a Sailor
Loving a sailor is not all play
For with your heart, the price you must pay
It's mostly having and not to hold
And being young, but feeling old
It's sending a letter with an upside down stamp
For a special lover on a faraway coast
Being in love with merely your dreams
Bring thoughts of heaven where lovelight gleams
You wish it were possible for him to phone
You want to hear "I'm on my way home."
And if he comes it's laughter together
Unconscious of people, of time or the weather
It's hearing him whisper his love for you
And then comes a kiss, a promise of love
And knowing you're crying for wanting him so
You watch for the word that he is well
You wait for months, no word for a spell
And when the mail comes, you bubble with joy
Just like a baby with a shiney new toy
Loving a sailor is unfounded fears
Crying until there are no more tears
And hating yourself, the world and the War
Because it took the man you adore
Then going to church, you kneel and to pray
Really meaning the things that you say
And though you know that he is far away
You keep on loving him more everyday
You're proud of the job he's helping get done
Doing his part, as Uncle Sam's son
You for your country he's doing his best
He's fighting for you, love.........all the rest
You're tired, you're weary, you're doing your share
Your helping your sailor to win over there
Loving a sailor is bitterness and tears
It's loneliness, sadness and unfounded fears
No, loving a sailor is really no fun
But it's worth all the pride when the battle is won

Having the opportunity to read many of the Military related poems and stories shared by our Veterans on this site has enriched me.

Thank you

Hey Drywall

I sent this poem to an old Navy buddy and he mailed me back asking if I was proposing. I always knew life on the ocean did strange things to Navy guys.

I had to ask him if part of the induction process was a tour of the Bermuda Triangle.
