The city is capping off a yearlong celebration of its founding by Spanish explorer Don Tristan de Luna, who landed Aug. 15, 1559, on the shore of Pensacola Bay.
"It's the grand finale," said Steve Zieman, a committee member of Celebrate Pensacola, the nonprofit group that organized the 450th events. "We're all going to relax and have a great party."
Today's festivities begin with the Don Tristan de Luna landing re-enactment at 9 a.m. on Pensacola Beach at Fort Pickens Gate Park. The re-enactment, featuring costumed performers, will be followed by a Catholic Mass by Bishop John Ricard.
"We're trying to be as historically accurate as possible with the landing," Zieman said. "The actors will come ashore in a rowboat, carrying a cross and the Spanish flag. They will dress the altar, then Bishop Ricard will perform the blessing."
The main event is today's Street Festival and Birthday Bash, opening at 5 p.m. in downtown Pensacola.
The party will feature the world's biggest birthday card, a community time capsule, Spanish cuisine, historical re-enactors, fireworks and live entertainment by a variety of performers, including Nashville musician Will Hedgecock, and members of the Florida A&M University Marching Band.
Laura Lee, spokeswoman for Celebrate Pensacola, said the group is expecting crowds "in the thousands" at the rain-or-shine street party.
"We're hoping for a diverse crowd, because the event offers something for everyone," said Lee, who recommended the public bring folding chairs for seating. "Whether it's the fireworks, the music or the food, people will find plenty to celebrate."
