Commandant leads Armed Forces in Veterans Day Celebration
Submitted by: New York Public Affairs Story Identification Number: 2003111112248 Story by Cpl. Beth Zimmerman New York(November 11, 2003) -- The U.S. Marine Corps and the New York Stock Exchange are both steep in tradition and history. Both thrive today after more than 200 years of existence. On the day after the Marine Corps' 228th Birthday, Gen. Michael W. Hagee, Commandant of the Marine Corps, visited the stock exchange to honor those who have served. Hagee rang the opening bell to open the stock market and commemorate Veterans Day this morning. Members from each branch of service gathered to honor those who have served. Lingering birthday thoughts and the Commandant's presence inspired more espirit de corps. "It was an honor to come to the stock exchange and be included in so much tradition," said Army Master Sgt. Robin Brown, Office of the Chief of Public Affairs New York. "It was also great to be able to help celebrate the Marine Corps birthday," said Brown. A Marine Corps band added to the day's atmosphere. Marine Sergeant Cheryl Dengler, Marine Forces Reserve Band, New Orleans, said she will remember this day for a long time. "It was an honor to be here today. This is an experience we will most likely never have again, especially on Veteran's Day," said Dengler. "It seems like the exchange workers were all so busy, but most of them took the time to stop and listen." Members representing other services stood with the Commandant as he rang the bell. "At the last minute we were asked to join the Commandant next to the bell," said Coast Guard Ensign Mark Labert, from Fort Wadsworth in Staten Island. "It was a fun chance to represent the Coast Guard ... and it was an honor to stand with the Commandant of the Marine Corps." Stock trading halted later on in the day for two minutes of silence in honor of those who are fighting the war on terrorism today.
