Memories of Vung Tau
David Jones of Port Macquarie, New South Wales said:
Flight Sergeant Alan Thomas Carpenters served with the Airfield Construction Squadrons, namely 2ACS and 5ACS. My lasting recollection of Flight Sergeant Alan Thomas is when we landed at Vung Tau. He was there to greet us, complaining about the heat and the fact that he had lost his "hat - fur felt" [Aussie Slouch Hat]. I, being the compassionate soul that I am, gave him mine. I only found out later that those 'hats' were in great demand by the American Servicemen as souvenirsat a highly inflated price. Al must have had a touch of conscience because he gave me a dollar when I found out the real reason that he wanted the hat. Service memories are cherished memories - the good and the bad. |

VUNG TAU
Never made it there. Was supposedly a 3day in-country R&R location for American troops. Did any of you get to go there for an R&R? Not me, nor any other grunt that I knew in my unit. Was this a real deal?
WAZZA: Welcome to the site, Mate. Didn't have much contact with you guys in Nam. Did briefly meet one of your countrymen at a hospital in Saigon. I was there for a jungle rot and he was there for a "social disease" . I enjoy your posts, and look forward to seeing more of you on the board.

Never there
and only knew of one guy that made it, a helicopter pilot. He's the one that told me about "Salty Dogs". I thought at first he was talking about Navy Hot Dogs, but then he started explaining the inner tubes. Ahhh, I said. Who the heck was getting these "3 day R&R's?" Heard about them, but never knew a soul that got one.
Would have loved to have seen Aussie land. Since I lived through Vietnam, wish I wouldn't have gone to Hawaii to visit my Navy Brother. Welcome aboard Wazza, I'll turn a beer can upsidedown when I finish it tonight, in your honor. Packo Since I don't drink that much beer any more....would a Martini Glass be ok?
