SSS Silent Sniper System
Any of you guys a VN era Sniper? If So I was wondering if any of you saw or used an experimental sniper rifle named the SSS. It was a Winchester Model 70 in a shortened .458 Winchester Mag case. Had a fully suppressed barrel. We tried several scopes on it, The 3x9 redfield worked best because of eye relief. Odd looking rifle, looked like a regular model 70 with a water cooled browning .30 barrel on it. I used one when I was in the 5th SF and I understand that there were a total of 5 of them sent to VN. I know that one went to the 9th div and one went to the 23rd div, don't know where the other two went. Just thought I'd Ask.

Saw a "demonstration" of the weapon by Gus Werbel in Saigon. Won't bother to tell you what he shot at. The sound of the firing was supressed however you cannot stop the crack of the round if it isn't sub-sonic.

In the 5th Marines, 1966, we started with a matched M-1D, tehn recieved the Model 70. Maybe the guys who came into the scout/sniper platoon in 1968 saw one. Ask in the 5t Marine Scout/Sniper web site.
