Was The Vietnam War Just A Business Deal Between JFK & LBJ Gone Wrong? LBJ "Cancels" The Partnership.
Odd how the Kennedys and LBJ made so much money off of JFK's Vietnam
War. Nixon left the White House and he was practically broke. So we know he was not involved. LBJ & Lady Bird became one of the largets shareholders in Halliburton through Brown & Root. Texas and Mass defense companies did very well during Vietnam. My guess is the Kennedys & LBJ cooked up this business deal to make a little side money and JFK started getting cold feet. LBJ then decided to "cancel" the partnership. LBJ became very wealthy off of Vietnam and the Kennedys still got a good cut. I think LBJ thought it would be a minor little war where he could clear $10 million. He was well known for people showing up at his office with paper bags filled with cash both in and out of office. The Democrats then spat on Vietnam Vets who returned home. Today we here that loser Kerry talking about how great JFK was in almost every speech. Yeah Kennedy did a great job starting the Vietnam War. |

Since it isn't true. LBJ and Brown and Root had a symbiotic relationship long before the Vietnam War but as major stockholders, I don't think so. Let us await the arrival of this "credible reference". I don't remember when Halliburton sucked in Brown and Root but I had long been home from the war. It was the beginning of the end for Brown and Root as we Texans knew it. They have gone from being one of the top ten paving contractors in the United States to not having a single road job today that I know of. A pity, they were a good outfit. The history of Brown and Root is an interesting story in itself. Bill Clarke |

I asked for a specific credible reference to support your unfounded allegation that "LBJ & Lady Bird became one of the largets shareholders in Halliburton through Brown & Root". Are you stating that the cited book contains information regarding a pecuniary interest in Brown and Root or Halliburton by President Johnson or his wife? If so - kindly provide the specific reference in the book which states that particular piece of information. Nigel Brooks |

The history of Brown and Root is an > interesting story in itself. > > Bill Clarke I could post dozens of sources here is one below. LBJ & Lady Bird were major shareholders in Brown & Root. Vietnam was essentially a business partnership between JFK & LBJ. JFK got cold feet and LBJ "cancelled the partnership" in Dallas. 58,200 American men died but hey LBJ and the Kennedys got richer. http://www.npr.org/display_pages/fea...e_1569483.html Dec. 24, 2003 -- Current criticism over Halliburton's lucrative Iraq contracts has some historians drawing parallels to a similar controversy involving the company during Lyndon B. Johnson's administration. Nearly 40 years ago, Halliburton faced almost identical charges over its work for the U.S. government in Vietnam -- allegations of overcharging, sweetheart contracts from the White House and war profiteering. Back then, the company's close ties to President Johnson became a liability. Today -- as NPR's John Burnett reports in the last of a three-part series -- Halliburton seems to be distancing itself from its former chief executive officer, Vice President Dick Cheney. The story of Halliburton's ties to the White House dates back to the 1940s, when a Texas firm called Brown & Root constructed a massive damn project near Austin. The company's founders, Herman and George Brown, won the contract to build Mansfield Dam thanks to the efforts of Johnson, who was then a Texas congressman. After Johnson took over the Oval Office, Brown & Root won contracts for huge construction projects for the federal government. By the mid-1960s, newspaper columnists and the Republican minority in Congress began to suggest that the company's good luck was tied to its sizable contributions to Johnson's political campaign. More questions were raised when a consortium of which Brown & Root was a part won a $380 million contract to build airports, bases, hospitals and other facilities for the U.S. Navy in South Vietnam. By 1967, the General Accounting Office had faulted the "Vietnam builders" -- as they were known -- for massive accounting lapses and allowing thefts of materials. Brown & Root also became a target for anti-war protesters: they called the firm the embodiment of the "military-industrial complex" and denounced it for building detention cells to hold Viet Cong prisoners in South Vietnam. Today, Brown & Root is called Kellogg, Brown & Root -- a Halliburton subsidiary better known as KBR. |

I got it out of the library. That is indeed interesting - did you have to pay an overdue book fee? (or do you simply have a remarkable memory) During June of 2002 you wrote the following: "From: Mark Gerard Miller (mgm21@bellsouth.net) "This is the only article in this thread "View: Original Format "Newsgroups: alt.politics "Date: 2002-06-30 08:00:18 PST "An excerpt from "Sold to the Highest Bidder: The Presidency from Dwight D. "Eisenhower to George W. Bush," by Daniel M. Friedenberg: "The need for nearby ground bases to attack Afghanistan requires some "modification of our hostility toward totalitarian regimes, but it should be "kept in mind that three nations we have embraced -- Uzbekistan, "Turkmenistan, and Tajikstan -- are among the world's worst violators of "human rights, while the huge nation of Pakistan is a rigid military "dictatorship. Our fight against terrorism should not involve a repetition of "the United States' sorry history in Latin America, where not only were "dictators supported by the CIA, but our government was actively involved in "the repression of democratic movements. "(Page 228)" Then, just over a year later you wrote: "From: Mark Gerard Miller (mgm21@bellsouth.net) "Subject: Bush sends youth into war but wouldn't go himself "This is the only article in this thread "View: Original Format "Newsgroups: alt.politics "Date: 2003-07-12 09:58:28 PST "Excerpt from "Sold! To the Highest Bidder: The Presidency from Dwight D. "Eisenhower to George W. Bush," by Daniel M. Friedenberg: "[quote] "At the height of the Vietnam War there was a waiting list of some one "hundred thousand men trying to get into the Texas guard, for obvious "reasons. These included 150 pilot applications, some of whom had to wait "eighteen months to be considered for flight school. Bush jumped over the "waiting list and was assigned one of the last two pilot slots, after scoring "the numerical minimum on the qualifying test. The story of how this happened "has since been revealed. "In 1968 a close friend of the Bushes got in touch with Ben Barnes, then the "Speaker of the Texas House, informing him of the need to get young Bush into "the guard. This, he said, was done at the request of the elder Bush, at that "time a Texas congressman. Barnes called the general in charge of the Texas "Air National Guard and recommended Bush, who was immediately accepted. Once "in, even his attendance at guard duty is filled with holes: there seem to be "several months where no records or even verbal testimony indicate he did his "minimum service. "[unquote] "Friedenberg wrote that other Texas "sons of privilege" didn't have to serve "in Vietnam either, including Lloyd Bentsen's son." You will forgive me if find it hard to believe you do not own the book won't you? >Yes, LBJ had a pecuniary interest in Brown and Root. This isn't a big secret. Again - does the book "Sold! To the Highest Bidder: The Presidency from Dwight D. Eisenhower to George W. Bush," by Daniel M. Friedenberg" contain any allegation that Lyndon Baines Johnson - or any of his family, owned stock in, or had any kind of financial interest in Brown and Root? If not - exactly where did you come across this information - please be specific. Nigel Brooks |
