According to what I read in the paper, the coyotes in the east are larger because on their way here they interbred with the red wolf, a solitary breed native to this area but now almost extinct because of this. I know they tried recently to reintroduce the red wolf into the Great Smoky Mountains National Park but did not succeed.

I got bitten by a rabid bat about three years ago. Just a shot every three days for 21 days and in the arm now.

I recall back in elementary school, a kid having to get a series of 7 shots in the stomach for rabies. OUCH! Right, nasty stuff.
The cycle of turkeys and coyote/fox/raccoon go together. If the population of turkeys is down, the animals are doing well. But on the flip side of that, if the population is up, you can count on a rabid year for the animals. The NYSDEC (Dept. of Conservation) had introduced wildcats and the timber wolf to the area. The funny thing is though... they wont admit it. When a hunter goes out in the woods and finds a deer carcass in a tree, it makes the hair on the back of your neck stand up. They discounted it as "unexplained".
